Together we have read the first 6 chapters of I am Malala. We have read about her culture, how disputes are settled , conditions of the school and her home. How boys are treated compared to girls. With a partner, discuss your thoughts so far about her life in Pakistan. What do you find most surprising about her life? Refer back to specific chapters/pages in the book.

Life in Pakistan isn't like life in America. Some people don't have enough money to buy shelter like the children of the rubbish mountain. On page 81 of chapter 6, " The Children of the Rubbish Mountain" it says, " He explained that the children would sell what they had sorted to a garbage shop for a few rupees". Also, girls are not allowed to leave the house or go anywhere without the company of a boy. In Pakistan they settle disputes by taking revenge and sometimes it just keeps going on and on. Girls don't get education like boys do. Most girls cannot read or write because they are only needed in their family to clean and cook. For instance, Malala's mother cannot read. We find it most surprising that the Taliban shot Malala because she was speaking out for her own rights.

In the children of rubbish mountain it explains how the Pashtuns settle disputes. They take revenge, however it sometimes does not stop. In most of the schools there is not toilet. So, the conditions in the village are very poor. We found it surprising that women were not allowed to leave their own homes without a male. This was found in chapter 4, the village. Also we realized that there was a great difference between the wealthy people and the poor. At Malala's dad's school the wealthy did not want their children to go to school with the poor children. We foun this piece of information in the chapter tittled Children of Rubbish Mountin.

Together we found that that there isn't a lot of freedom for women. In Children of Rubbish mountain, it says it not right for a Women to go out in public without a male. Women are just expected to cook, clean and give birth to babies. They are not not treated as fairly as men and often do not get the opportunity to go to school. Parents hope to have sons instead of daughters because of the cultural value. Most people celebrate the birth of a baby boy,but when a daughter is born people have simpathy and grieve as if someone had died.

Together we found the cultural differences between America and Swat are great. First of all woman are treated diffrently for example on page 13 Malala said "I was a girl in a land where rifles are fired in celebration of a boy, while girls are hidden away behind a curtain, their role of life simply to prepare food and give birth to children."

Life in Pakistan isn't as fair as life in the US. For example ,Women aren't allowed to go anywhere without men, even if it's just a five year old boy. Also, not many girls are allowed to go to school. Thirdly, the Tablin took over and are inprisining and killing the ones who stand up for their rights. In Pakistan, most family's are poor so their children have to dig through garbage for goods such as cans and bottle tops for money, according to page 81.

Problems in Pakistan are solved very viently. for example, in chapter five it stated that if one man killed someone's family member, than they would go and kill one of the original killers family members, and it just go's on and on. Although most people in Pakistan act like that, Malala doesn't. Another problem in Pakistan is the taliban aren't afraid to shoot the children. For example, Malala stated that one of the Talibans went onto her school bus and shot her in the head. Pakistan isn't a fair place.

We found it surprising that women couldn't even leave their houses unless a male guided them. For example it could be a five year old boy guiding a teenager that is a girl. Overall we think that women in Pakistan should have their own rights. Throughout all of the chapeters, we have noticed the education of women and men were very different. One example is Malala's mom cannot read. Another example is Malala wanted to go to school, but people believed boys deserved better education. Unlike Pakistan, we live in a free country where women are free to do what they wish.
For example, you see lots of women at the auburn mall and lots of other public places.

We found it most surprising girls can't go to school or can't get an education. In America women have equal rights just as much as men do. Men can walk outside whenever they want in any type of clothes, but women have to where a hijab. Also the women have to walk outside with a man or boy but a man can walk outside by theirself. It women try to go to school sometimes the taliban will come and shoot them down. In America it's a free country so women can do anything they want. Normally women are just used to cook do chores and work around the house. However in America they can get a job higher and better than men's.

We thought that America is different than Pakistan. For example, we have toilets that flush. Also, everyone is treated equally, as in Pakistan, girls are treated differently. Finally, girls don't usually go to school because they are only expected to cook and clean at home. Woman can not even leave their home without a male. Arguments are settled with killing the other family's male. Boys are treated like kings while girls are treated like slaves. If our calculations are correct, women are not treated equally as men, the United States of America is more equal. Pakistan and most of the Middle East is not fair to women.

Women do not have as many rights in Pakistan as women in America. In the second paragraph of page 41 of "Growing Up in a School" in I am Malala, Malala writes about her father's education "Many of his classes were taught under a tree on the bare ground. There were no toilets, and the pupils went to the fields to answer the call of nature. Yet he says he was actually lucky."
