False information that contributes to triggering unnecessary panic is spreading faster than the virus itself. The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned against the consequences of a pernicious “infodemic”.

“Use of silver dag to fight the virus”

During the pandemic, it has been common to find “miracle cures” in social networks, including a hot garlic tea, drinking water constantly, or baking soda rinses, that, although they are useless against COVID-19, they are not harmful to those who try them. However, there are other things that could cause problems, such as fake news about the use of silver dag to fight the virus that could actually cause kidney damage.

The use of silver dag to treat infections became a trend in Europe and the U.S. but since 1997, the FDA has warned people about the lack of security involved in its use that could also explain argyria, a condition that turns the skin grey after a long time of its consumption.

“Transmission via mosquito bites”

Although it’s always appropriate to keep a safe distance from the insect that spreads paludism and dengue fever, respiratory viruses don’t seem, at this stage, to be transmitted by mosquito bites, but by droplets of saliva or nasal secretions expelled by an infected person when coughing or sneezing. Speaking of animals, no house pets seem to have been infected by the new coronavirus.

“Transmission via parcels from China”

Although their lifespan varies depending on the environment and temperature, pathogenic germs can only survive on objects such as parcels, coins and credit cards for a few hours. Products imported from China to Argentina have been travelling for too long to transmit the virus.

“Bioweapon rumours”

Just as conspiracy theories proliferated about HIV, theories surrounding the coronavirus posit that the disease is a bioweapon engineered by the Chinese government, the U.S. government or Bill Gates’ foundation and that it was either deliberately or accidentally released. These rumours overlap with tall tales of former Soviet bloc countries supposedly carrying out secret geopolitical operations to weaken democracies via massive viral propaganda campaigns.

GROUP: Milagros Chaulet, María De Gottardi, Delfina Ferraris, Lucía Tramannoni, Francisca Baduna

The coronavirus changes the color of human blood. A video appeared on social media of a man claiming to be a scientist who was told to be taking blood samples to detect the new coronavirus. He showed one in a test tube saying it looked "bright red, healthy and clear." Then he showed another of what he describes as "patient zero" where the blood appeared purple.

Drinking alcohol does not kill the virus. Frequent or excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages does not eliminate COVID-19. According to the WHO, it may increase the risk of suffering health problems.
Group: Vicoria, Mia, Lautaro, Tomás and Juan Pablo

Fakes news from a Whatsapp viral chain

Año y división: 2° “A”

Ingles Básico.
