This dance celebrated the hope that the white settlers would simply go away and the buffalo would come back, as well as being reunited with their ancestors. The government ordered the arrest of the chief and the tribe tried to stop the arrest which led to gunfire and violence. This lead to the Lakota people leaving their reservation and moving towards Montana to find new territory to hunt in. Resulting in the battle between the Lakota and Cheyanne which overall defeated more than 200 soldiers as well as Custer. After this battle, many Lakota fled to Canada, but the rest were to return to their previous reservation.
