Human Papillomavirus is a common virus that can cause different types of warts and different types of cancer later in life. Human papillomaviruses are small double stranded DNA viruses that infect cutaneous and mucosal epithelial tissues of the anogenital tract, the hands, the feet, or the mouth. Symptoms of HPV may include genital warts, common warts, plantar warts, flat warts, and even cervical cancer. The risk of HVP transmission to the baby through childbirth is very low. If babies do get it, their bodies usually clear the virus on its own. Long term effects of HPV would include different types of cancers. Cervical and other cancers including cancer of the vulva, vagina, penis, and anus. It can also cause cancer in the back of the throat. There is no way to know who will develop cancer from HPV, but it is always a possibility. There is no treatment for the virus itself, but genital warts can be treated by prescription medication from a doctor. Surgical removal of the warts is also an option.
