I was also an English teacher in Japan in various organizations, ranging from EIKAWA, (from Early Years across to retiree learning or maintaining English has a hobby) to Public schools with the Ministry of Education (Junior State and Senior State High Schools).

I was the first person to consider the use of the smartphone video feature as a tool to learn English; without knowing, this then evolved to become TikTok and other such service providers.

The PhD analysed students' speaking speed per second over a 30 second clip; eventually students started to create longer smartphone videos. See fuller explanation here.

I designed a Unit for Master Students to learn English by producing mini-documentaries (see Sendai City Orphanage).

When developing your PhD idea or vision, it is necessary to think long term and create possibilities to develop the concept further.

After succeeding with video production in the classroom, I became an international speaker and trainer on Video Editing and Filming.

In Qatar, in collaboration with peers, I investigated the use of iPod technology to enhance business content learning.

In Singapore (NUS) as chair of the Library of the English Centre, I began to utilize my research and data collection skills, by examining students Library habits.

While at UNE I collaborated with emerging leaders in technology and investigated Studio based learning led by Billingsley.

Research is about keeping engaged and involved with like-minded colleagues in search of improved teaching strategies.

Now at CDU, I am supervising a PhD student to investigate play-based learning to develop Korean Primary School students' learning of English.

I constantly receive PhD proposals, some are interesting and some are not fully developed. During the design of the PhD, it is best to think of contribution and impact on Society, as well as what the applicant will become after finishing the PhD.

I didn't know the value of my PhD at the time, but I knew that using smartphone video features would have an impact on Society. It really helped that the iPhone came out.

Education; Technology; and pre-service teacher professional experience. I am also interested in anything related to Education, coaching and training.

Being a Lecturer as well as a Supervisor is time demanding, but also rewarding. It is invigorating to view and listen to beginning research express their understanding of their topic that gives them most satisfaction.
