Three Mile Island

On March 28, 1979, a cooling malfunction with the second nuclear reactor caused part of that reactor's core to melt as well as begin leaking noble gas material into the surrounding environment. The incident happened at Three Mile Island, near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. This incident was important because, combined with the Chernobyl disaster, it caused most Americans to gain a very strong fear of any nuclear powered energy. This was a turning point because it led to the environmental protection movement gaining a lot more support. This event also led to new environmental technological innovations such as solar panels and wind turbines. Lastly, this event led to environmental protection becoming a major concern for Americans when big decisions would be considered in the future. This day was different from other important days in US history because the Three Mile Island incident left a major impact on American culture and innovation.

First Lightning

On August 29, 1949, the Soviet Union tested its first atomic bomb; code named, "First Lightning." By testing their first successful atomic bomb, the Soviet Union immediately established itself as the world's second superpower with only America to contend. This was an important day in American history because, once President Truman learned of the Soviets' success, he effectively began the nuclear arms race by ordering the construction of a hydrogen bomb. This was a turning point because it shifted American focus from prosperity to concern over when their last day on earth would be before they would be incinerated by nuclear bombs. Another reason this was a turning point was because it turned the Cold War into a major international conflict that drew concern from every part of the world. This day was different from others in US history because it launched the only war in American history to last many decades and led to conformity becoming a major priority for Americans at home.

May the Fourth Be With You

One important day in US history was May 25, 1977. This was the release date of "Star Wars: A New Hope." At the time, it was simply called, "Star Wars." This was an important moment for US history because it change American culture on a scale and in a way that had never been seen before. Furthermore, it revolutionized the film industry. While pop culture was certainly a noticeable phenomenon across the country before this movie released, specific movies and franchises were not the main focus of pop-culture. Instead, celebrity news and current events were the focus of pop culture. Along with putting movies in the spotlight of most American minds, which is still clearly present today, this movie inspired many people to start thinking about outer-space, extraterrestrial life, and our place in the universe. These concepts were introduced with "2001: A Space Odyssey," but they were not really ingrained into audiences until Star Wars released. The other contribution Star Wars made to the film industry was its groundbreaking technological and artistic innovations for film making. Not only did George Lucas create the greatest and most popular villain in all of movie history, but his work with Light and Magic introduced technologies and techniques that made most future movies possible. Films such as "Robocop", "Alien", "Terminator", and "ET" all owe their success to Star Wars. This day was different from other important days in US history because it was one of the few times in our history that we left a permanent mark on the world and our home without starting a major international conflict. Unlike every other movie franchise, Star Wars was the only one that quickly became an international sensation, not just a domestic hit. Lastly, Star Wars was especially important for critics of Ronald Reagan's plan to build laser satellites to shoot down Soviet missiles from space. They called his plan "Star Wars" for obvious reasons.

Shay's Rebellion

Shay's Rebellion began on August 29, 1786. The Rebellion lasted multiple days, but its effect was seen immediately. Many angry farmers from Massachusetts joined to protest the federal government's imposition of heavy taxes with little regard for the debts that many farmers accumulated to fight the Revolutionary War. Their protest was able to last many days because, under the Articles of Confederation, the federal government had no authority to establish and use military forces or enforce most laws. This day was important because the protest that started at this time convinced most Americans that the Articles of Confederation needed to be changed at best or replaced at worst. This was more important than many other days in US history because it led to the adoption of the kind of government we have been living under ever since. This day was different than other days in US history because it happened before the federal government we have now was established.
