Energy derived from the Earth's heat is called geothermal energy. A volcano's core is very hot, making it an excellent source of geothermal energy.

It is possible to find areas where the rocks are hot, but there is no hot water or steam rising from them. In this case, deep wells can be drilled through hot rocks and pumped with cold water. A fracture in the rocks heats up the water as it runs through it. Steam and hot water return to the surface, where they can be used to drive turbines and generators to generate electricity.

How Geothermal energy is utilized in communities - Direct Application and Heat Pumps

Geothermal Energy can be used in multiple ways by the communities.

Direct Application:

There are even people who use it directly. One of the most widely used applications utilizes heated groundwater directly without requiring any special equipment. Low-temperature geothermal resources are used in all direct-use applications, which range between 50 and 150 °C (122 and 302 °F). A central supply source of geothermal water and steam can be used to heat buildings in a district or all of them from a single source of low-temperature water and steam. Aside from that, geothermal energy has been used to heat swimming pools, balneological (therapeutic) facilities at spas, greenhouses, and aquaculture ponds in many parts of the world.

Heat Pumps:

Communities in the United States use Geothermal energy as a way to stable moderate temperatures in the winter and summer. During the winter, geothermal heat pumps can be used to heat buildings and cool them during the summer by making use of relatively stable moderate temperatures within the first 300 meters of the surface.
