Student choice is a large emphasis on the Daily 5. Students are mandated to either read alone or read aloud with a partner everyday. After that they have the choice to either do some word study, have some free writing time or continue on their reading. The choices give kids an empowered feeling because they have a say as to what they are learning and what they are going to do throughout the day and this increases their likelihood to stay on task and complete their assignments

My 5th grade teacher created a sense of community that made everyone feel welcomed. The first day he allowed us to sit where ever we wanted and then had us help create a class set of rules. This gave us the power to create our own rules and made us feel like we could do more than we ever could

Teachers need to keep 3 main relationships in mind when in their teaching environment. Teacher-student, teacher-teacher, and student-student. These three relationships are all build on trust and mutual respect. In order for the students to learn efficiently, the students need to trust the teacher, they need to trust that the information being taught is accurate and they need to trust the teacher so they feel like they can ask questions at any time

Students can only pay attention for so long. Mental breaks are important to either give the students time to stand up and talk or to get some energy out. Some common breaks are games like silent ball or bingo. Or they can be as simple as getting up and walking around the room

If the previous day was long he would say we could review by playing jeopardy or continue to push on. However, giving us the option to take the whole day off was nice and then gave us the motivation to push through for multiple days
