To grow healthy and strong infants/preschoolers need a variety of minerals and vitamins. However, Vitamin D and iron are the top two important vitamins and minerals young children need. Alongside these important vitamins/ minerals, young children still need potassium, vitamin E, and fiber in their diets to help support their developing bodies.

Infants are small children anywhere from birth to 1 year old. During this time infants are developing at an astounding rate. They often learn to smile, babble, crawl, and eventually walk. Around 1 year, infants normally have tripled their birth weight.
Preschoolers are children between the ages of 2-6 years. During this time children are very active, so it is important for parents to give them a beneficial diet to supply their preschooler with enough calories for healthy weight gain.

Unlike adults, infants have no nutrient reserves; however, there is one exception: iron. An infant needs iron reserves as they only consume breast milk or formula milk. Without these iron reserves, infants have a higher chance of developing and iron deficiency. Infants who are exclusively breastfed have a significantly higher chance of become iron deficient later in life. One way to avoid iron deficiency is to purchase a iron-fortified formula or to give breastfed infants 1 mg/kg of a liquid iron supplement a day until iron-containing solid foods are introduced.
Similar to infants, preschoolers do need a decent supply of iron but not to the gratitude that infants do. Instead preschoolers need a good supply of potassium, vitamin E, and fiber. Many children of the preschool age do not get the appropriate amount of these vitamins/minerals which are needed for healthy development.
