A Tennessee Tall Tale

When I was reading this tall tale I noticed there were a lot of literary elements. one of them was personification. An example from the story that shows personification was "sun got caught between two ice blocks". This quote shows how the author gave the sun qualities of a human. I know this because the sun can't actually get caught in between blocks of ice but a human can.

On the first page of the book the author gave a creepy tone and vibe. The author wrote "A Lonely Childhood" as the title. I think the author did this because they wanted to give the reader some suspense to hook the reader and so they can keep on reading. I also think the words on the page that helped the tone were poor conditions and workhouse.

On this page the author described the time with descriptive words. I could tell the words were descriptive because I could paint a picture of what the beast looked like. The words that the author used were starving and eager. I think the author used this because they want to be consistent with the creep vibe.

On this page the author used another form of figurative language called an idiom. An idiom is when you exaggerate something so that it makes it unbelievable. For example saying it was raining cats and dogs is an idiom because it did not happen but you exaggerated that it was raining. In the book the author said "What a fine thing it is... that dead men never tell!" I think the author said this because they wanted to exaggerate the fact that the character was surprised at what they saw
