America's involvement in the Spanish American was to keep Cuba safe from Spain. The U.S. put a ship, the USS Maine, on the waters near Cuba to keep the peace. The USS Marine ended up exploding and the Yellow Journalism caught onto the story and spun it way out of sorts to make it look like Spain was the one who blew up the ship. We then got into a Spanish-American war and won, and went and gained four new territories from The Treaty of Paris. The territories were Cuba, Guam, Puerto Rico, and Island nations of the Philippines.

The Panama Canal was such a hot commodity because of all the trading opportunities it had with other countries, geographically wise. Therefore, America spoke with the Columbians and wanted to make a route where the French bailed out (Panama Canal). The Columbians then said America would have to pay money for it and drastically increased the price so America would get ripped off. President Rosevelt got mad and went to Panama and asked them if they would like to be free from Columbia, and of course they said yes. Then the U.S. parked all their warships in front of Panama, but Columbians didn’t want to start a war, so they let the ships remain there and then the people of Panama all loved America. America had access to Panama and used the Panama canal for almost 100 years until they finally had to give the land back.

America remained neutral when the war first broke out because they didn’t want to get their involved. America’s economy was booming during that period of time where they remained neutral. Later on, a ship called the Lusitania, that carried many Americans, was sunk. This caused the U.S. to get mad, so we talked to Germany and they promised that they’d never do it again. Not much later, the Germans were back to their unrestricted submarine warfare and ended up sinking 3 other american ships, killing and injuring more americans. Clearly Germany wasn’t able to hold up their end of the bargain, so the U.S. got mad and declared war.

It was wet inside and the trenches weren’t initially made for a long term purpose because nobody thought they were going to be there for that long. There were rats running around eating the decomposing bodies, but not only that, they would also carry around lice and spread it to the people. Many of the soldiers were becoming mentally unstable, rightfully so. They didn’t have electricity, food, super clean water, showers… and the way they had to live was absolutely inhumane.

The Paris Peace Conference was an international meeting convened in January 1919 at Versailles just outside Paris. Great Britain, France, and Italy fought together during WWl as Allied Powers. The United States, entered the war in April 1917 as an Associated Power, and while it fought on the side of the Allies, it was not bound to honor pre-existing agreements between the Allied powers. The conference came up with a document called the Treaty of Versailles which basically made Germany take all the blame for the war, Germany had to pay major war reparation, Germany had to give up a lot of land and limit their military, which sent Germany into a recession.
