The core values of humanism contrasted greatly from the highly devout, conservative beliefs of the Middle Ages. Believing that man was the centre of his own universe, and should live as such. His own musings, along with the compiling and subsequent publishing of Cicero's letters, illustrated a way of life that involved faith AND humanism. Rather than choosing one or the other, Petrarch believed one can have strong faith and still celebrate man's potential and achievements.
