Cabo de la Vela (Spanish for "cape of sails") is a headland in the Guajira Peninsula with an adjacent small fishing village. It is a popular ecotourism destination of the Caribbean Region of Colombia. The cape is surrounded by the La Guajira Desert, several saline lagoons and mudflats visited by large populations of American Flamingos. Seafood is the number one and only option and lots of beach restaurants have fresh langostas and fish on the menu. Best option if you like langosta is to buy it directly from the fishermen when they arrive on the beach. Prices start at COP15,000 per kilo and can be bargained down. Ask them to boil them for you and eat them with lemon. You can also find a fantastic fruit stand on the main street that makes amazing juices and fruit salads.

Caño Cristales is an exceptional and surprising natural site, probably considered one of the world’s most beautiful. Its unique ecosystem is very fragile and now belongs to the Sierra de la Macarena Natural National Park. This succession of water falls and rock formations offer a colourful show thanks to the prehistoric aquatic plants (In fact, the site is a geological formation that is older than the Andes) with yellow, red, green and blue colours covering the rocks. For this reason, the river is known as the river of five colours. The wet season is the best period to visit the site, from June to November. At this time, the river is at its most colourful

This is a tall and conical volcano, which has been active for about two million years. The ‘Ruiz’ belongs to the Park Los Nevados, where rivers spring, that supply the coffee region of Colombia (Caldas, Risaralda, Quindío and Tolima) .The maximum height permitted to ascend is 5.125m of the 5.321m to the top. The road to the ‘Nevado’ is full of extraordinary geographical attractions including lakes, volcanic mountains, hot springs, among others. Ascending to the ‘Nevado’, vegetation gets more and more scarce, but the landscapes become more impressive. As it gets colder, the picture resembles that of a desert. When the day is clear, you can see the top of the mountain snow peaks.

Monserrate is an important symbol of Bogota. Not in ecological respects, but in religious terms. The name is derived from the Montserrat mountain near Barcelona in Spain. You can go up in different ways. There is a cable car, a train, but you can also just walk. The cable car was built in 1953 and consists of 2 cars with a capacity of 40 persons per car. The cable car ride takes about 4 minutes. The train was ready a bit earlier. The train is already at the mountain since 1928. With a speed of 3.2 meters per second it takes about 5 minutes to reach the top. In December 2003, it is possible, the arrival of the new train with a glass roof, nothing of nature to be missed during the ride up.

This is the greatest fortress ever built by the Spaniards in any of their colonies and it still dominates an entire section of Cartagena's cityscape today. It should definitely be your first choice of fortresses to visit. The original fort was commissioned in 1630 and was quite small. Construction began in 1657 on top of the 40m-high San Lázaro hill. In 1762 an extensive enlargement was undertaken, which resulted in the entire hill being covered over with this powerful bastion. It was truly impregnable and was never taken, despite numerous attempts to storm it. A complex system of tunnels connected strategic points of the fortress to distribute provisions and to facilitate evacuation. The tunnels were constructed in such a way that any noise reverberated all the way along them, making it possible to hear the slightest sound of the approaching enemy's feet, and also making it easy for internal communication.
