I have begun to give students time in class to participate in their own Genius Hour. At the beginning of each class, students are given time to explore their own interests as they pose question, answer questions, and generate more through their explorations. Our goal is to think of products these interests can become and see if they can connect to the topics we are covering in our projects. This is my attempt to engage students, as I feel we are struggling with this across the board. My hope is that you can provide some examples of what you would research, explore, or create if you had the opportunity to do so. I hope this can help students who are struggling to find a topic.

Like other addictive substances, nicotine releases dopamine—a chemical in the brain that helps control pleasure and motivation. When a smoker finishes a cigarette, the pleasurable feeling subsides quickly, and he or she craves more. Eventually a person develops a tolerance, meaning more nicotine is needed to feel pleasure—and overtime, more is needed just to feel normal.

The most popular e-cigarette brand is JUUL, which uses cartridges that deliver the nicotine equivalent of 200 puffs of a traditional cigarette. While adolescents commonly think vaping is a safer alternative to smoking, addiction actually happens faster with JUUL than with traditional tobacco products.

Bigfoot, or Sasquatch, is a giant ape-like creature that some people believe roams North America. It is a cryptid (or species rumored to exist)and just like the Chupacabra or Loch Ness monster, there's scant physical evidence to suggest Bigfoot is actually out there. But that doesn't stop alleged sightings of the ape that never shows its face or Bigfoot buffs from trying to prove there's life in the legend.

Most Bigfoot sightings occur in the Northwest, where the creature can be linked to Indigenous myths and legends. The word Sasquatch is derived from Sasq’ets, a word from the Halq’emeylem language used by some Salish First Nations peoples in southwestern British Columbia, according to the Oregon Encyclopedia. It means "wild man" or "hairy man."

I also want to learn to take photos of the stars. There are so many special features on cameras that I don't know yet, and so many editing tools that I have yet to discover. And, photographers can take many MANY photos, a lot of times of the same thing. I would also like to learn about what to look for in these photos, and be able to pick the best one, and then let the others go (delete the others).

I love fashion and sustainability, not to mention supporting small businesses. I spend a lot of time browsing Instagram, Etsy, and Depop for vintage pieces, and sometimes I enjoy going to thrift stores, vintage stores, and antique stores in person. Because of that, I wanted to learn more about proper identification of vintage- so I can be sure I have the real thing, not a reproduction or something from a different period than I was looking for. Understanding labels from different eras is one way that I can correctly identify vintage. Other things that can help you understand the era an item is from are care tags, union tags, color schemes, fabric content, sewing techniques, and more. It is really rewarding to have a deep understanding of the clothing you're wearing.

Social media has increased awareness of people who are traveling the country and living out of vans. I would have totally done this when I was younger and I'm always curious--- where do people find these vans? How much does it cost to convert them? What should your van have? How do these people make money while traveling? Where are safe places to park/sleep? What safety precautions should people living in vans take?

Learning in the Brain (Mr. Lieberman)

I have been geeking out on learning and what actually happens in the brain. So far, i've listened to the books Uncommon Sense Teaching, Thinking 101, Moonwalking with Einstein, and I am currently listening to The Power of Habit. I am fascinated with what we have learned about learning and how the brain works, but also how much we still do not understand. It is also helpful to understand because a lot of what we know applies to the classroom and how students learn and what strategies are effective.

Sold a Story: How Teaching Kids to Read Went So Wrong

There's an idea about how children learn to read that's held sway in schools for more than a generation — even though it was proven wrong by cognitive scientists decades ago. Teaching methods based on this idea can make it harder for children to learn how to read. In this podcast, host Emily Hanford investigates the influential authors who promote this idea and the company that sells their work. It's an exposé of how educators came to believe in something that isn't true and are now reckoning with the consequences — children harmed, money wasted, an education system upended.
