Freedom demands sacrifice relates to the story because Donald's grand-da wanted freedom. Grand-da thought that the world wasn't right anymore. He thought that there was no freedom or justice that the world was better earlier in time. But everyone thought he was crazy. So in the middle of town Grand-da took the flag and tried to burn it in front of everyone. But then SOS (shoot on sight) came and shot grand-da. I think that is what Grand-da wanted because he wanted to be freed from the world he lived in. So he sacrificed his life for freedom.

Grand-da wanted freedom and to share what he thinks. He wanted the American flag to have a different number of stars and stripes. In return he ended up getting shot by the SOS. In this dystopia story you could not put in your thoughts. Every choice was made by the government.

This is a theme that emerges from the story because it actually happened in the story, and it is a good lesson. Donald's Grand-Da, Arthur, was upset that they had just passed the SOS law, Shoot on Site, where the government can just kill anyone they want to. To show that there needed to be freedom, he stood in front of a crowd, and tried to burn an inflammable flag. It didn't work, but it got a message through. The government came and shot him, but he had probably gotten through to the community. He showed that there needed to be freedom, and he sacrificed his life for it.

This is one of the themes of Old Glory because Gran-Da thought that creating the SOS that they took away the freedom and he knew that what he was doing was going to get him killed. He wanted the people to see the consequinces of disobeying the rules. He wanted them to realize that this law is taking away freedom and make them want to change even if he has to sacrific his life for them to get it.
