Bartle imagines what death would feel like and he has an out of body experience.

On page 158 to 160 Bartle describes how his body being torn apart by an explosion, he would only hear an echo while he yelled out, Murph would save him but he would die anyway. His out of body experience would come after death as he would see his mother and friends weep over his casket. Powers uses deep imagery in this passage, giving the reader the true image of the situation. Just powerful imagery of death in the combat zone. Although Bartle does not really die he gives up the image of death from the first person point of view instead of seeing someone else die and explaining it in the third person point of view.
"I imagined it all...'qua,qua,qua"

The innocence of the young girl is seen by Murph and he is attracted to that innocence as he is surrounded by guilty men, Bartle becomes intrigued as he sees this woman as well. She helps a young man off a helicopter and brings him into the hospital, she sees the carnage of war but still twinkles with innocence in her eye. From page 163 to 165 the two men evaluate this girl and her presence in the war. Powers expresses the feelings of Murph wanting to be able to choose the environment around him and not be forced into something he was not comfortable with. He wanted freedom.
"The chopper landed...he hadn't asked for"
