Nighthawks is a 1942 oil on canvas painting by Edward Hopper that portrays people in a downtown diner late at night. It has been described as Hopper's best known work and one of the most recognizable paintings in American art. Within months of its completion, it was sold to the Art Institute of Chicago on May 13, 1942 for $3,000. Starting shortly after their marriage in 1924, Edward Hopper and his wife Josephine (Jo) kept a journal in which he would, using a pencil, make a sketch-drawing of each of his paintings, along with a precise description of certain technical details. Jo Hopper would then add additional information about the theme of the painting. In January 1942, Jo confirmed her preference for the name. In a letter to Edward's sister Marion she wrote, "Ed has just finished a very fine picture--a lunch counter at night with 3 figures. Night Hawks would be a fine name for it. E. posed for the two men in a mirror and I for the girl. He was about a month and half working on it.

The headless sentry was about a wealthy plantation owner supporting the British but his daughter was with the colonies. She was an informant for general Francis Marion and she told Marion about everything about her dad’s affiliation and intel. Then one day Francis marches to the plantation to free a soldier. So the informant invited the sentries to a banquet next door. Yet one of the sentries had to say. This was a grave mistake because Francis came down the road with his troops and the sentry thought it was British troops. He approached them and then realized I was Marion’s troops. He then aimed his pistol at the nearest horseman, while he was aiming also. They both missed and then a cavalry soldier came out of nowhere and sliced the sentries head off. Now the sentry roams the plantation grounds searching for his head.

I found this at http://americanfolklore.net/folklore/2011/07/the_headless_sentry.html

In S.E. Schlosser’s account of the West Virginian folktale, “John Henry,” John Henry was born into slavery in 1840, But was freed soon after. He was a very strong man, and went to go work for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad company. He was the strongest man there by a mile, and nobody could rival his strength. One day, C&O needed to drill a hole straight through the Big Bend Mountain, since you couldn’t go around it. Thousands had died in the making of it, but John Henry had made the most contribution and had survived. Soon after however, a drill machine challenged John Henry. John Henry knew he could drill faster than any machine at the time, so he set up a race. On the day of the race, all the workers were there to see John compete with the drill. When the race began, both the drill and John were working hard to get through the mountain. When the race had ended, John Henry was victorious, but his heart had exploded, and he died.

The song talks about him going to New Orleans at the end of the revolutionary war, and he was at the battle of bighorn. He also states he stole California from the Spanish and he marched to the German trenches. He puts the he flew the final mission in the Japanese war and he dropped the “mushroom”. He was disgusted of his countries sins and mistreatment. The raccoon was in a tree that Davy Crockett happened to pass under. Davy saw the raccoon, aimed, and then the raccoon said something. It said “Is that the famous Davy Crockett? I might as well come down then.” He knew that Davy never missed. Davy felt bad for the creature and said, “I can’t hurt a thing like you! Go on into the woods.” The raccoon scurried away. Davy said, “What’s the hurry?” The raccoon said, “I just want to get away before you change your mind!” Davy did, but the raccoon was already away.

http://www.uexpress.com/tell-me-a-story/1997/7/1/davy-crockett-and-the-wily-raccoon

Aunty Greenleaf was a scrawny old woman with a wild thatch of gray hair and a crooked nose. She lived in a hut surrounded by pines just outside Brookhaven, and she sold herbal remedies to the folks in town. Mostly, people avoided her, except when someone got sick because it was said that Aunty Greenleaf was a witch. Her home remedies worked too well to be natural. Folks figured she had to have help from the devil or one of his familiars.

I found this athttp://americanfolklore.net/folklore/2010/08/aunty_greenleaf_and_the_white.html
