War of the Gems – Diamond vs. Sapphire

While diamonds will almost always remain the age old popular choice for all people while buying engagement rings, with the priceless colorless center stone there are other stones too, one could always go with clear white sapphire engagement rings they are equally just as durable and more affordable, in comparison to diamonds.

Learn how to choose between, white sapphire and diamond engagement rings:-

Color –

Sapphires come in a variety of colors whereas diamonds come in a single clear sparkle color. The white sapphire isn’t clear, but has a milky color, which is the essential color of them gem, whereas the white diamonds are actually just colorless and in essence diamonds refract the colors from the light it captures around it.

Both the stones also range in colors ranging from light pinks to yellow and different shades of blue. But sapphires don’t give off colors but rather it’s the color of the stone itself. This is the main difference between the two.

Hardness –

In this aspect things can get a bit confusing between the two, because we know that diamonds are obviously harder than diamonds, but in terms of wear and tear, it doesn’t mean that diamonds are not prone to chipping. In fact it’s the opposite; diamonds, especially princess cut diamonds are more prone to chipping than sapphires hence a sapphire on gold engagement rings or rose gold engagement rings make more durable wedding rings over diamond engagement rings.

Durability –

Sapphire are far more scratch prone as compared to diamonds, where diamonds are practically completely scratch proof, hence sapphires maybe easily scratched and abraded in comparison to diamonds, even if they don’t get prone to chipping as much as diamonds.

Light Refraction -

The prime reason why diamonds are preferred over sapphires, because diamonds brilliantly capture light and reflect it back in a different shade of shimmer, every time, under different lights. Hence the shimmer of a diamond will always be new to you and hence is more exciting and special in comparison to the duller refraction of sapphires – with no color being thrown out.

While the war of the two gems will always remain, one can get a huge variety in choice of metals while selecting wedding bands. And if one wants uniqueness, one could go out of the box and opt for emerald engagement rings and ruby engagement rings.
