In fact, the origin of living beings involves several key questions: when did it occur? Could it occur more than once? How was the transition between chemistry and biology? Did it take place on Earth or outside she? And, halfway between science and philosophy: was it the result of chance or necessity?</title>

         <title>As early as the 1920s, the hypotheses of Oparin and Haldane suggested that the first step in the origin of life was the synthesis of organic molecules in the primitive atmosphere, using ultraviolet light from the sun as energy. Those molecules would accumulate in shallow lakes or seas. There they would combine to give rise to the so-called primordial soup, the basis for synthesizing more complex molecules that would facilitate the appearance of cellular life.</title>

         <title>This theory was greatly reinforced in 1953, when Stanley Miller performed his famous experiment. It consisted of neither more nor less than introducing into a chamber a mixture of gases similar to that which was believed to make up the primitive atmosphere. After supplying energy by means of electric discharges, the gases reacted and gave rise to several of the basic components of living matter, thus demonstrating that their synthesis under abiotic conditions was possible.</title>
