"Challenge" Your Students Biggest Take Away by Shannon Surell

Take a moment to consider what you have learned about and discussed with your colleagues over the past couple of weeks. What stands out to you as being the biggest "take away" from the course? What is something that you know for a fact you will be able to bring back to your classroom? What is something that you for sure would like to share with other educators in your building?

I like the idea of creating games to teach students. I have so many new idea of how to engage students while teaching curriculum. It did take a long time to put together the unit, so it would be a struggle to do while teaching during the school year. However once it's done I can continue to use it over the years. I think the students will love it!

If I am honest, I was a little overwhelmed when first starting, thinking how I was going to have to do a ton of work to truly gamify my teaching. As I read more articles and looked at more examples, I realized how even little changes, like what you call an assignment, can spark some extra interest. I am so excited that I feel I can start weaving in aspects of gamification and know that it can be a process of building and expanding through the year. I really want to work on badges for student skills and effort.

I learned more about how I can utilize google classroom in a fun and engaging way to guide students through lessons and units. I like how it is easy for me to track how my students progress and that I can give them feedback in a way that rewards and motivates them (badges, tokens, etc.). My biggest takeaway from the course is that gamification can be applied across all grade levels and is adaptable for every student. It was cool to see how I was already doing gamification in some ways in my classroom and I am excited to take it up a notch next year! :) I would share with other educators the resources I found in this PD like flippity!

I learned an overview of how to even begin a gamification unit. You added so many details and articles which gives lots of choices to build it. I think I will try to gamify a Digital Citizenship lesson. I think students will be even more engaged than a Nearpod which I currently use.

I really like the idea of using gamification language and assigning points for completing assignments. I also really like the concept of having students earn badges. I think it will really be engaging for students. I definitely want to try implementing a Google Classroom Challenge with my students next year. I've also really enjoyed exploring Flippity!

It is a lot of work to set up gamification, i.e. getting the resources together and making sure it all flows. Once it is set, though, it will be great to go back to something that I know has been successful, but also enjoyable for the students. I look forward to completing cultural expectations and taboos for my foreign language classes.
