How Food Makes Me Feel - Summer 2022 by Dr. Martica Heaner PhD

As we read about the digestion of food and absorption of nutrients, we will see how food can affect Every. Single. Cell. in your body. Food can have good effects and bad, or even terrible, effects. Sometimes we don't even realize that a food we eat daily or weekly is actually responsible for symptoms that we sometimes don't even realize we have...Let's start to think about making connections. So, please share (anonymously if you wish) what you have noticed about how different things you eat make you FEEL (physically and perhaps mentally as well, if applicable.) For example, do some foods give you stomach aches, migraines?, fatigue? What foods make you feel good? Share your discoveries about food so far here. Feel free to get graphic. Feel free to remain nameless.

95% of the time, bloated

When I wake up, my stomach is relatively flat against my body. However, by the end of the day, after eating and drinking various items, my stomach is so enlarged that it looks like I could be pregnant. I had gone to a gastroenterologist who did tons of tests and eventually concluded that I did not have any kind of major issue with my organs and no kind of major intolerance but that it was probably from all the greens I ate. He advised me to stop eating anything green (beans, lettuce, avocado, peppers) for 3 weeks and see how I feel. Unfortunately, I never did that so here we are - I still experience the same effects of bloating and unclear as to what causes it. - Michelle Hergenhan

I ate Dominoes pizza several times a week my first year of college and experienced no remarkable effects from it other than lethargy, but, because my diet was almost entirely fried foods I frequently felt very tired after eating. After not having Dominoes for several months over the summer, I was unable to eat it again. It resulted in stomach cramps and diarrhea, I'm guessing from the amount of grease on the pizza.
Whenever I have a vegetable heavy meal I feel energized after I eat, something I didn't realize I wasn't experiencing until I changed my diet and became healthier.

Yesterday while I was at work, my boss bought salads from a store for us to eat during lunch. Those salads were labeled "fresh" and honestly that's just a marketing word to get people to buy the products. Once we opened one of the salads, the feta cheese was rotten. The other salad had super dry tuna. So we ended up eating the kale/lettuce and the dressings. Even after that, I felt my stomach ache, and it was just very uncomfortable since it caused indigestion and constant thirst. I believe that the full salad wasn't fresh and they just left it from the day before, if not more.

I have trouble handling grains as well. I’m convinced that my dairy and grain reactions are due to a cross-reactivity.I would love to do research on the connection.

Sometimes it feels like a mental thing because when I see an egg in front of me and I feel sick to my stomach, but other times I don't have the mental block eat it and I end up feeling fine. I definitely have gotten nauseous after eating them, but usually I notice it's just my mind. Usually this happens in the morning when I think of having an egg as the first food I will eat and want to throw up. It feels like it has something to do with my empty stomach in the morning rejecting an animal product. I'm not entirely sure though, it's just a recurring observation.
As for a food that always makes me feel good, I would just say any fruit. It satisfies me as a snack throughout the day, and makes me have a good amount of energy and my stomach always feels light and not weighed down. Fruit is my go to for when any other food sounds unappealing/ too heavy.

This is applicable to basically any food, if taken over and over again. It can be anything - especially sweet goods or pastries. For example, a slice of cake can get mentally exhausting after continuous consumption. Or, a certain meal(s), such as meals that are prepared over and over again by family. There comes a point where I’m not even interested in eating that meal, simply because it makes me feel mentally fatigued.

Sometimes a migraine starts before the nausea but either way I feel ill after eating too much processed sugar in one sitting. One food that makes me feel good is a matcha lemonade. I'm not a coffee person because coffee does not taste good no matter what you add to it. So I opt for teas or cold pressed fruit juices and that usually gives me energy and my body feels at it's optimal state. Also a good salad will do it for me.

I believe that our diets can affect our moods tremendously because of certain compounds they contain. Personally, caffeine makes me feel energized and focused and I believe it's because it's a stimulant. In addition, fruits also tend to give me a lot of energy. I'm the type of person to feel tired and overwhelmed with work even after a full-course however, I have noticed massive difference on my energy level on days I eat a lot of fruits (berries & bananas to be specific) even without a good meal.

Soy Milk Allergy

I have a soy milk allergy. When I drink soy milk, my stomach gets irritated and feels swollen, and about 10 minutes later, I vomit everything in my stomach. I am glad that there are many kinds of plant-based milk instead of soy milk. So, I usually pick oat milk for smoothies or ice cream. I get hay fever. Since I stopped eating dairy food, symptoms of hay fever such as an itchy nose and swollen eyes got milder. I try to buy organic vegetables and fruits that reduce those symptoms too.

I have many food allergies, some more intense than other, and some that I tend to ignore entirely. I am majorly allergic to shellfish so I avoid that at all cost because it can cause my throat to close, and end up in the hospital. I'm also allergic to bananas but it only makes my throat itchy so at times I ignore that, and eat it anyway.

Although I have allergies, I have noticed that I also have some intolerance to certain foods. I have an egg intolerance that causes me to have really bad stomach aches for the entire day, so I tend to avoid eggs often.

When I eat fast food, I can eat a whole meal and will not feel full. I usually will feel sluggish and kind of gross afterward opposed to when I eat healthy foods. I also find that if I haven’t eaten sugar in a couple days( refined sugar) I get a headache. Not sure if it’s my body going through a withdrawal-like phase or if it’s because I haven’t had enough sugars for the day or both. I also get a really bad stomach aches when I eat food with too much spice or too much grease.

Milk, especially when consumed on an empty stomach, makes me very bloated and gassy, which I only noticed in the past year. Large amounts of protein makes my farts smell more rancid that they are already. Lastly, although caffeine makes me energized, it also makes me urinate constantly.

Fresh foods make me feel amazing, super energized, awake and light on my feet but my body metabolizes them very quickly. Foods heavy in fat and carbohydrates like certain breads or even certain vegetables, like potatoes make feel very sluggish and bloated. I am lactose intolerant, so while I love how certain dairy products taste they make me feel horrible; it makes my whole body swell like have a stomach ache or virus. And so the only feeling I get when I have coffee with whole milk instead of almond or oat is regret.

I occasionally drink a soda every so often but I try and limit that intake since whenever I do consume it, my stomach becomes bloated and the feeling of heaviness can become overwhelming. I prefer water overall but sometimes, at occasions, the social aspect pushes you to drink/eat unhealthily. Also since I work at a fast food chain, I kind of have to eat the food there on my 30 minute breaks. If I don't it would just take up too much of my break. However after eating their food almost daily, I learned that noodles are extremely filling. The hard way...

Caffeine

Growing up, I was heavy on caffeine. Was that a good thing? Probably not. However, nowadays, too much caffeine gives me what is called a "Caffeine crash". To be honest, I have never dealt with that before. My first affect that caffeine had on me wasn't until recently, spring of 2022. It seems now that my body (specifically my stomach) is disliking the coffee I drink. I usually prefer a medium roast coffee. Recently, my first dose of an espresso shot actually made me lightheaded and feel drowsy right after (I never had an espresso shot until May of 2022). It is honestly kind of cool to see how different my body is handling caffeine now compared to even a year or two ago. Plus, I work at a café so being surrounded by caffeine for 8-9 hours a day can be quite challenging for me.

This food is high in sodium and not known to be healthy. My family is fond of the spicy flavor or instant ramen and ending it with some rice mixed into the broth. We eat this very often as a late night snack and it always brings us satisfaction. We are Korean so for us this is our go-to food of peace.
