The introduction of this virus had many short and long-term effects. The Spanish and Portuguese conquistadors brought the disease when they arrived in what is now known as Peru. A short-term effect this had was the loss of many Incas lives. Almost 250 000 Incas died because of the Smallpox disease. Another short-term effect of the disease is that it caused the death of Huayna Capac in 1527, who was the leader of the Incas at the time. Prior to his sudden and unexpected death, he did not name a successor. This led to a civil war between the brothers of Huayna as they fought for the throne. A long-term effect this had was the inability to fight back against the Spanish conqueror Pizarro and his troops in 1532. When Pizarro arrived in Peru, he was met with a very weak and divided population due to Smallpox and civil war. This allowed him to easily take a lot of gold and silver with little to no resistance from the Incas. The Incas believed that potatoes assisted with childbirth and the healing of injuries. The Spanish were the first Europeans to discover potatoes as they conquered the Incas region in 1532. The ships returning to Spain were full of potatoes along with gold and silver. An effect this had on the Incas is that they left the Incas with not much food supply as they used to eat potatoes a lot. They also did not trade anything for it as the Europeans just took whatever they wished to take. An effect this had on the Europeans is that it helped feed many people in Northern Europe as it became a big source of nutrition. A long-term effect that the discovery of potatoes has is that it introduced the world's first fertilizer to the other side of the world. This fertilizer is called the Peruvian guano. In the Caribbean, pigs quickly adapted to their environment as they began eating iguanas, shellfish, and sweet potatoes that they had never seen before. They also did very well in the wild. The people of the Caribbean also loved the taste of pork which jump-started the farming industry to have pigs. A short-term effect that pigs had on the population of the Americas is that they carried many diseases. Pigs carried diseases such as influenza, and whooping cough. These diseases caused the deaths of many Native American people which triggered the Spanish to use Africans as slaves as there were little Natives left. This provides a long-term effect for the people of the Caribbean as almost the entire population becomes black. This explains why so many people from the Caribbean are now mostly black. A long-term effect this had on the Americas is that it revolutionized pig farming.
