Ymittos is a long but narrow mountain (total length 20 km), with its highest peak reaching at 1026 m. An intense but short gorge separates the northern part of the mountain from the southern. The commonest rock of northern Ymittos is the schist, while limestones can also be found particularly at the southern and western parts of the mountain. This explains the lack of springs, which can only be found at those parts of the site, where the two kinds of rock overlap. Τhe site of Ymittos includes a great number of small and large caves as well. It is essential for the improvement of life quality in the urban areas to act towards the conservation of wild nature that might be neighbouring the urban areas in question. This is the case for the request for the conservation of the natural habitats and the wild nature in general of Mt.Ymittos.

The quality and importance of the Vravrona site is indicated by the following characteristics: 1) the variety of sufficiently conserved habitat types within a relatively small area; 2) the archaeological site with the temple of Artemis nearby the wetland acts as a barrier for extensive human activities since it has got a protection status; 3) the position of the site, nearby Athens (40 Km); 4) the importance of the wetland as refugee for many bird species; 5) the traditional vineyard cultivations (since 500 B.C.) which prohibit extensive and intensive industrial use; 6) the actually not-altered general site character since ancient times. OTHER IMPORTANT SPECIES WITH MOTIVATION D.INVERTEBRATES: Callianassa tyrrhena, Upogebia pusilla are important for the ecological balance of the sea bed within the site.NOTEThe population of Phoxinellus spp. of this site belongs to the subspecies P. stymphalicus marathonicus.
