Week 3: 6 Pillars of Faith

1. Belief in Allah (Tawhid)

This is the belief in the oneness of Allah. A Muslim must believe that Allah is the sole creator, sustainer, and ruler of everything that exists. He has no partners, children, or equals. This belief also encompasses Allah's attributes, such as His omnipotence, omniscience, and mercy.

2. Belief in the Angels

Muslims believe in the existence of angels, created by Allah from light. They are spiritual beings who carry out various duties assigned by Allah, such as delivering His messages to the prophets, recording people's deeds, and managing the universe's affairs. Angels are obedient to Allah and do not possess free will like humans.

3. Belief in the Books of Allah

This refers to the divine scriptures revealed by Allah to guide humanity. Muslims believe that Allah revealed books to various prophets, including the Torah to Moses (Musa), the Psalms to David (Dawood), the Gospel to Jesus (Isa), and the Qur'an to Muhammad (PBUH). The Qur'an is regarded as the final and unaltered revelation, superseding previous scriptures.

CONCLUSION

The first three pillars of Iman establish a Muslim’s relationship with Allah, the unseen spiritual beings (angels), and the divine guidance provided through scriptures. They form the foundation of faith by acknowledging Allah’s supremacy, His means of communication (angels and books), and the role of His revealed messages in guiding human conduct.

Week 2: 5 Pillars of Islam

The Five Pillars of Islam are the foundational acts of worship and practice that define a Muslim’s faith and actions. They are considered the framework for a Muslim's life and spirituality.

Shahada (Faith): The declaration of faith, stating that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His prophet. This testimony affirms the monotheism central to Islam and the belief in the prophethood of Muhammad.

Salat (Prayer): Muslims are required to pray five times a day at prescribed times: dawn (Fajr), noon (Zuhr), afternoon (Asr), sunset (Maghrib), and night (Isha). These prayers serve as a direct connection between the individual and Allah.

Zakat (Charity): Muslims are obligated to give a portion of their wealth (usually 2.5%) to those in need, purifying their income and helping to reduce inequality in society. This act of charity is seen as a duty for those who are financially able.

Sawm (Fasting during Ramadan): Muslims fast during the holy month of Ramadan, abstaining from food, drink, and other physical needs from dawn until sunset. The fast is a means of spiritual reflection, self-purification, and increased devotion.

Hajj (Pilgrimage to Mecca): Muslims who are physically and financially able are required to make the pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in their lifetime. The Hajj occurs annually during the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah and is a time for seeking forgiveness and renewing one's faith.

Together, these pillars guide Muslims in their daily lives, spiritual growth, and relationships with others.

Week 5: The Concept of Ihsan and Its Relation to Islamic Eschatology

Ihsan refers to the concept of spiritual excellence and represents the highest level of faith. It is derived from the Arabic root "hasuna," meaning "to be good" or "to be beautiful," and signifies doing good or acting with perfection. Ihsan, therefore, means to worship Allah as though you see Him, and even though you do not see Him, knowing that He sees you. This idea is closely tied to the inner dimension of faith and transcends mere actions by emphasizing intention and mindfulness.

Stages to achieve Ihsan:

Do Good to Others

Do Good to Others at the Best Level

Do 1&2 Only Because of Allah

Hadith of Jibril

The concept of Ihsan is beautifully explained in the famous Hadith of Jibril. In this hadith, Jibril asks the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to define Islam, Iman, and Ihsan. Regarding Ihsan, the Prophet said, "It is to worship Allah as if you see Him, and though you do not see Him, He sees you." This hadith encapsulates the essence of Ihsan as a means to attain spiritual excellence, with a direct correlation to one’s preparation for the afterlife.

Hajj is the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, required once in a lifetime for all Muslims who are physically and financially able. It is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and occurs during the month of Dhul-Hijjah. Hajj includes rituals such as Tawaf (circling the Kaaba), Sa'i (walking between the hills of Safa and Marwah), standing at Arafat for prayer and reflection, and the symbolic stoning of the devil at Mina.

The virtues of Hajj are immense. It cleanses sins, as stated by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who said that a person who performs Hajj without engaging in sinful behavior returns as pure as a newborn. Hajj also fosters unity among Muslims worldwide, reinforces faith and patience, and serves as a reminder of the Day of Judgment. Additionally, it symbolizes submission to Allah and commemorates the sacrifices of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham).
