Why should you attend this training?

Greetings PAL Mentors! When you facilitate peer-assisted learning for your mentees, using inclusive practice is crucial! It helps to ensure you don't unintentionally and unfairly disadvantage some mentees and advantage others. It helps create an environment that meets mentees' diverse learning needs and enables everyone to flourish. Developing your inclusive practice is also super useful beyond PAL; for example, employers are increasingly looking for graduates with the competencies and skills required for more inclusive 21st century workplaces.

What will the training cover specifically? 

This training session will help you to enhance your inclusive practice for use in PAL and beyond. Specifically, the session aims to help you:

• Enhance your understanding of important ideas related to inclusivity and accessibility.

• Gain the knowledge, skills and confidence to use specific, practical methods to make your PAL sessions more inclusive.

• Develop your familiarity with helpful resources to guide your continual professional development in future, such as the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Guidelines.

In line with Office for Students (OfS) regulations, universities and colleges must take certain actions to protect their students from harassment and sexual misconduct; Consent Matters forms part of these actions. 

Consent Matters is an essential online training course, designed to help students understand sexual consent, promote effective communication and respectful relationships, and empower participants to be an active bystander. 

The training is relevant for everyone, regardless of sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, race, religion or belief. Its aim is to empower you to shape healthy, positive and respectful relationships with others. It is not heteronormative in content, nor is it aimed at a specific age range. 

The Consent Matters training includes the following: 

Module 1: Thinking about consent – This module will define the meaning of consent, to help you to identify when you have been given consent, and will cover scenarios when consent can, or cannot be given, regardless of your gender or sexual orientation. 

Module 2: Communication skills and relationships – This module will help you to define and recognise your own boundaries, and how to talk about boundaries with others. 

Module 3: Looking out for others – This module will help you to take simple, safe, and effective steps to challenge harassment when you see it.
