I have been involved in supporting staff and students use electronic submission of assignment for many years and I see many benefits;
a) Staff eventually find it more effective and the process more streamlined although there is the initial learning curve to wade through,
2) Students really appreciate the detailed feedback and ease of access. As a student on a Blended Learning Masters programme I really valued NOT having to make the 4 hour commute...just to hand in an essay.

I have mixed impressions of e-submissions and marking (based on experience with Turnitin). As staff, this streamlines the assessment and moderation process but often slows down the marking and limits the kind of feedback that I, as the marker, could provide. The originality scores are somewhat arbitrary in my experience but is useful for identifying cases of plagiarism. From the students' perspective, it is an efficient system to receive feedback. In an older/different version of Turnitin(?) that I have used previously, students were able to check their originality scores while writing or at the point of submission. It is disappointing to see that this feature is not available in the current version

Also with e-marking the feedback is easily accessed in the future for other pieces of work (rather than being on bits of paper that often get lost!).

I’ve done online marking for about 12 years. Marking online means you don’t have to carry anything, and you can log into it anywhere with internet. It’s a good use of transit time!
But my primary driver is always whether the students benefit. Students prefer online marking and return because (1) they can most definitely read it and (2) they can see it as soon as it’s done, without having to come in to University to pick it up. Students usually find, too, that markers give more when marking online, so they get more feedback.

I support International students and teach them on a module Academic and Management Skills, which involves completing their first essay. As new students studying in a second language, they tend to pay careful attention to feedback. I use turnitin/grademark and rubrics. It saves me some time in writing comments, but because of the amount of feedback I give for this assignment, it is still quite time consuming. I can highlight types of grammatical errors that are repeated and then advise students to focus on those specific areas. Instead of simply correcting the error, I often point out the type of error e.g. subject/verb agreement. The main benefit is that because it can be accessed from the VLE, students can look back at the feedback (for instance before their next assignment). As a personal tutor, it is easily accessible for me to check their assignment if a question arises during a tutorial.

E-submission is especially useful for the detection of plagiarism. It also allows staff to access the coursework/dissertation/... from anywhere to read and assess it. From a student's perspective, it gives them more time to finish the work, as they don't need to get it printed and have to hand it in in person.
