Stage 1: Trust vs. Mistrust

This stage is the first of the eight stages. This stage happens from infancy to 18 months of age. Erikson states that this is the most important stage in a child's life because it shapes how that child views the world, and their personality. I resolved trust in both my parents because they were there for me when I needed them and took care of me. I trust them even to today. In the textbook (pg. 130) its states "The critical element in developing trust is sensitive, responsive, consistent caregiving." This shows me that my parents did all of these things to help me build my trust in them.

Autonomy vs. shame and doubt is the second stage in Erikson's development. This stage occurs when the child reaches 18 months until the ages 2 or 3. Erikson states that at this stage children are more focused on gaining a better sense of self-control. At this stage my parents started to potty train me when I was 2 and it didn't take me long to catch on. In the textbook (pg. 135) it states "... they become more powerful and independent." This correlates to me because I become independent when using the bathroom. They praised me for learning it so fast and it built my confidence in myself.

The third stage of Erikson's theory is initiative vs. guilt. This stage happens between the ages of 3 to 5. During this stage children will start to assert their power and control over the world through social interactions. This is a stage where they are looking for a purpose. The textbook (pg. 174) states, "...they are learning that some of the things they want to do meet social approval, whereas others do not." This correlates to me because as a toddler I used to always ask my parents if I was good or bad person. Also I gained initiative and was always willing to try new things.

The fourth stage of Erikson's theory is industry vs. inferiority. This stage usually takes place at the ages of 6-11. In this stage children's social world expands as they start school. Through their social interactions they begin to find that their abilities are better or worse than their peers. In the textbook (pg. 220) it states, "If children are unable to obtain the praise of others or lack motivation and self-esteem, they may develop a feeling of low self-worth and thus develop a sense of inferiority." This correlates to me because at this age I went to school and I didn't have the social abilities everyone else had and I felt inferior to a lot of my peers.

The fifth stage of Erikson's theory is identity vs. identity confusion. This stage occurs within the ages of 12-18. In this stage children start to venture out and explore their independence and develop their sense of self. In the textbook (pg. 264) it states, " the time-out period that adolescence provides, allows young people to search for commitments to which they can be faithful." As a young adult I decided to get baptized and become a christian. With that I have to stay faithful to God and follow his commandments and his word.

The sixth stage of Erikson's theory is intimacy vs isolation. In this stage young adults go searching to find a intimate and loving relationship with another person. The ages where this stage happens is 19-40. I have entered this stage just recently, but I have already found an intimate relationship at an early age. I am still in that relationship of almost 4 years.
