The original eruption was so monumental that everyone within a fifty mile radius was told to vacate their premisis. The total casualties from the eruption were 57. There were a few people like Harry R Truman (not to be mistaken by the former president) who refused to leave. This was so unbelievable that there was even a song written about how he lost his life staying in his cabin on Lake Spirit

Mt. St. Helens is 8,366 Ft tall by and rises up to 9,600 feet above sea level. It used to be even taller before the top 1,000 ft was blown of in the Eruption in 1980. It is a stratovolcano that erupted back in May 18, 1980 and has only had slight eruptions up until 2008. Mt. St. Helens is currently active and still sends off small volcanic activity as result of the earthquakes in the area.
