Positive Impact: Cultural Preservation

When more tourists visit a country, it enables the visiting country to earn higher revenues. For instance, tourists pay an entry fee to enter attractions or historical buildings such as museums. This revenue could be used to rebuild, maintain or enhance historical sites. For example, Cambodia's tourism generates revenue to restore and maintain heritage sites like the "Angkor Wat" site.

Negative Impact: Cultural Clashes

If tourists were to visit a country and participate in cultural classes such as traditional cooking classes without understanding or respecting its meaning, they could misuse the cultural practises. For example, tourists may alter traditional food recipes to cater to their desired taste preferences, overshadowing traditional food flavours. For instance, combining Japanese and Western food together.

Negative impacts:

When tourists overuse the natural resources, such as water, land, and energy, to support tourism infrastructure and activities. Deforestation and loss of biodiversity due to the construction of resorts, airports, and other facilities like attraction sites. Air pollution from increased transportation (planes, cars, and cruise ships) as they emit harmful gas like methane into the air. Water pollution from waste discharge, and littering in oceans and lakes when people cannot find a place to throw their trash. Noise pollution affecting wildlife and local communities. May affect the animals and cause them to feel frightened. Deforestation could lead to the animals to leave their home as it becomes destroyed to cater to the tourism infrastructure. Disturbance to ecosystems caused by activities like hiking and off-road driving.

Positive Impacts are when revenue from tourism can support conservation projects, national parks, and protected areas. Ecotourism usually prioritises environmental protection. Sustainable tourism projects may lead to the restoration of degraded environments and help to rebuild the environment. For example, Costa Rica has become a sustainable tourism area by prioritizing the conservation of its rich biodiversity. Revenue generated from ecotourism is used to fund national parks, wildlife reserves, and reforestation projects. Visitors pay entrance fees to explore these protected areas, which directly support environmental conservation and local community development.

Tourism positively affects the economies of tourist generating and destination regions as both regions are interdependent in the tourism system. A positive impacts are employment opportunities in formal and informal tourism sectors. Tourism industry is labour intensive and it creates a large number and wide range of employment opportunities for people of varying skills in both tourist generating destination reigions such as transportion, an example is transport operators and service staff onboard the vehicles. Through this, tourism can reduce the national unemployment rate. Another positive impact is income generation from tourists' spending on consumer goods and services.Tourism generates income for locals and governments in tourist destination regions. When tourists spend money on consumer goods and services offered by locals such as accommodation and food, they can increase the incomes for these locals.Taxes on tourism spending can provide governments with considerable revenues. These can be used to invest in improving infrastructure and pay for education and health services, hence increasing the country's standard of living.Through the generation of income, tourism can alleviate poverty as it can transfer wealth from wealthier to poorer regions.Another positive impact example is In the 1980s, Maldives was one of the world's poorest countries. Today, its economy has grown due to the tourism opportunities offered by its natural landscape, resulting in low poverty rates.

A negative economic impact brought out by toursim can be Economic leakages resulting in less tourism revenue. An economic leakage happens when revenue generated by fourism in the destination region is lost to the economies of other countries. This may occur when tourist businesses in the destination region pay for the imports of goods and services to support the tourism industry (e.g. money spent on importing food from overseas). This reduces the revenue from tourism, minimising the income eamed by locals from tourism. Governments will have lesser revenue to improve the country's standard of living. In some developing countries, ecoriomic leakages may be so significant that it can wipe out the economic benefits of tourism Overdependence on tourism, which increases vulnerability to a sudden fall in tourist numbers as well. A country which is overdependent on tourism for its income and employment are vulnerable to a sudden fall in tourist numbers. This may occur due to unexpected events, causing the economic benefits from tourism to fluctuate and affect the livelihoods of people. Unexpected events may include Natural disasters, such as earthquakes. it can cause significant damage to tourism infrastructure in destination and generating countries.People fearing for their safety may postpone or cancel their travel plans. Economic Downturn as well. During an economic downturn, the economies of countries are negatively affected.Companies would attempt to cut costs.People may lose their jobs or experience pay cuts, leading to a reduction of disposable incomes. This results in people choosing not to travel to reduce spending.
