The rusty crawfish originated in the Ohio river basin in the states of Ohio, Kentucky, Illinois, and Tennessee. The rusty crawfish was brought into Wisconsin from fishers using them as bait while fishing. This species can now be found in a broad range of lakes and streams throughout Wisconsin. This species can negatively affect the native species by, taking over their habitat and natural forage. Scientists encourage people to catch and dispose of the crawfish as well as report sighting to environmental agencies.

They came from Asia, specifically on the shallow areas near Japan and china

They were imported to control algae in ponds.

They were put into ponds which when flooded allowed the, to escape to the Mississippi River which they then got to the Great Lakes.

Since they can reproduce quickly they outcompete native species of fish harming them.

Scientists try to remove them by using poison’s, physical barriers, parasites and predators. Electrocution is also done to stun them letting scientists kill them easier.
