When Gregor wakes up to find that he is now a “vermin”, the first thing he notices is how his physical appearance had changed. Since Gregor is now a large insect he can no longer walk or speak properly, which changes how he lives his life. Gregor’s transformation is the start of a downward spiral for him, he is no longer able to speak eloquently so he loses the power to express who he is and control his own life. His transformation have a rippling effect on the other characters as they modify their own behavior in response to his new form. The other characters have their own “transformation” as they learn how to fend for themselves while the only breadwinner of the house is locked up.

In the events preceding the story, Gregor was the presumed "leader" of the house; he made all the money and took care of his family. After his transformation Gregor loses the ability to perform most tasks, and succumbs to having to be very dependent on his family. His family members have to become "leaders" for him and become self-reliant. Gregor wasn't a good leader in the book, but that isn't his fault. His capability in a lot of things was limited, so he couldn't take any action.

book review

The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka is less than 100 pages long, but the writing is as sophisticated as any lengthy epic. Kafka leaves a lot of things up to the readers imagination, which is what makes this book so captivating. Up until now, most stories I have read have been about how a character rises up and changes for the better. In this story, however, I witnessed the main character's painful downfall. A different life begins for Gregor after his transformation; he is bound by four walls, isolated from human society. The rest of the Samsa family finds themselves in trouble since Gregor was originally the money-maker of the household, everyone in the house takes up a job. While Gregor's world is crashing down: his family is learning how to fend for themselves and thriving. The characters were hard to believe at certain points in the story. Gregor Samsa wakes up and turns into a huge bug for no clear reason at all; and his family never questions him. Gregor also seems to never question himself and seems to be content with where he's at for most of the book, despite the despair of his situation. The ending of this book was sad and felt incomplete, I was expecting for the main conflict to end in a different and more positive way. Then again this book was full of surprises. Despite it being hard to believe and borderline absurd, this book is a must-read. Kafka's writing really makes you think, and you can easily get invested in the book. The Metamorphosis is a level above what us freshman are used to reading, but the experience is totally worth it.

Gregor’s family are the people who reject Gregor and force him into isolation.

When his Father first sees his new form he locks him in a room. As time passes, he becomes more and more rude (antagonistic) towards him. He becomes very aggressive and throws apples at him, which leaves Gregor with a terrible injury. Gregor’s Mother is sympathetic to him and still treats him like a son. But the problem is that she can’t stand the sight of him, she goes hysterical every time she sees her child. This makes a deep impression on Gregor and leaves him feeling unwanted and not loved. Grete seems to be the only one that can face Gregor in his new body, she’s the only one that sees his needs and responds to them. Soon Grete gets tired of having to deal with her brother and begins despising him more and more. One day she decided to play the violin for her family and their guests, Gregor (who is confined to his room) comes out and causes a scene. The guests who were paying rent to The Samsas leave out of disgust, which angers Grete and her parents. Grete tells her Mother and Father that they must get rid of Gregor. Gregor overhears this and becomes very sad, he dies the next day.
