Languages classes, such as mine, have a big focus on vocabulary and grammar, so I usually plan my lessons so that students know when we are learning one or the other. I have them add notebook paper to it so they can write down any information that they need from me but also allow them to write on their music when I give them specific feedback upon their music. In addition, I want to be able to provide a monthly calendar so the students can see their goals and their objectives for each week. If they know what to expect, they potentially will walk into class more prepared. Also, it gives not only myself but the students the incentive to want to work ahead so we can continue to progress as a group.

Dawn Bruns-In economics my students set goals for each unit. They also must keep a journal, folder, or binder with their notes which I check twice a six weeks. This helps them stay organized and accountable. I used to make my honors world history students keep binders and I would do binder checks but now we primarily use Google Classroom so I don't do binders anymore. I do show students how to utilize the to-do list on Google Classroom though. I have also discussed creating a tutoring schedule for students who struggle keeping up with their work. I emphasize that tutoring doesn't have to mean you need help understanding the assignments; it can just mean you need a calm, quiet space to get your work done.

Typically I will come up with a guide or modify a guide from instructional material so the students have a resource to keep them on track. I will go over the guide with them prior to beginning and I will have them refer back to it as questions come up. I like backward mapping because it gives them the opportunity to look at a problem (anticipate a problem) and then also try to come up with a plan of attack for that problem.

This year has been quite chaotic for my classes. The year started chaotically with me having surgery the first two weeks of classes and missing both the Monday and Tuesday of those weeks. Then we have had two different moves. I have not expected much organization. I have tried to help with organization by not letting students take assignments from the classroom. This aids in them having the work when we need it again in class. Things generally work much better in my classes but this year has been a small disaster.

Students should be doing purposeful reading and taking notes in an outline format. I recommend students keep all their notes in a single spiral notebook to review at later points. I think having a digital "binder" to keep all of your materials and assignments in is also a great way to help students with organization.

They do have a journal and are required to write responses. They also have to be in my google classroom for different quick writes or response questions.
