Adrian Piper was a performance artist that was most prevalent in the 80's who used a variety of works to bring awareness to issues regarding race and her identity. She often uses her experiences as a black woman whose racial identity is not as visible. She uses techniques such as video performance and interactive works to analyze racial identity, the culture behind it and how it impacts her and others in everyday life.

One of Adrian Pipers interactive works consisted of a performance piece in which she called "my calling card." There were two calling cards that she had designed which served for two different purposes. The brown calling card she gave out was intended for people around her who made racist remarks. Calling card #2 was a white card that conveys the assumption of men who think that being alone out in public and especially at bars means you're available.

Adrian Piper struggles with racial identity as she is seen by part of the public eye as a white or light skinned woman. She is an African American woman and the misconceptions from people around her regarding her racial profile and also witnessing racial comments caused her to confront them in a way in which she feels is appropriate and in a mindful challenging way. In the past she recounts the discomfort shes faced when discussing her black/non black racial recognition and found that handing out the calling cards helped with more social advocacy and mindfulness.

Adrian Piper tries to challenge those around her who are sexist or racist. Most of the reactions she got out of handing her calling cards out were mainly ones of discomfort and a shock factor to follow. Overall the message she was trying to portray was to try and break gender norms and racial stereotypes. Piper has had her calling cards on display at exhibits for people to read and share with others about her empowering movement to call out racist and sexist peoples minds into looking at it from another perspective.
