What do you think is the main takeaway that Livingston (the director) wanted to convey to viewers about the lives of the Black LGBTQ+ community through this film? Is there anything you would have changed about the style of the film to convey this more effectively? by Kyle Blackburn

I think that Livingston really wanted to show how the world of ball rooms and houses helped the black LGBTQ+ population have a new home away from the struggles of the outer world, especially since a good amount of them didn't have their own homes anyways. I also really appreciated the idea of realness and authenticity that these balls and houses really aspired too. It didn't matter what you wanted to be. I think this really gave them a new sense of confidence and comfort in a world of so much hate and bigotry.

I'm not really 100% sure. I think that Livingston wanted to document the differences and similarities in how these folks experience life. Highlighting both the community aspects that bring them together as well as how they are mistreated in society. I think that the director did a good job comparing these two overall by actually having us hear stories from people from the Black + LGBTQ+ community.

I think the main message is how these houses + families + communities offer people a place of belonging. And these places of belonging are especially important for people who are marginalized.

Members of this community are said to have to choose between being black and being gay. The former is much more difficult to ignore, so in public, it is often the struggle that they choose to deal with. However, in these enclosed communities, they can fully be themselves, and not face discrimination for their race or sexuality. These spaces are less about being black or gay, but the fact that they are not minorities.

the producers were trying to portray these people as normal people, they are the same as everyone else. But they have certain nuances to their lives that make it slightly different. I think it would have been interesting to see more about their identity outside of just the shows.

I think he wanted to convey the hardships that the community faces especially in NY city with all the interviews that he added the the diverse population that was featured. Having all of that help set the scene and put yourself into an unfamiliar setting. I don't think that I would change anything about the style of the film other than maybe trying to get a few more professional interviews instead of having mainly people from off the streets.

I think Livingston wants to convey the raw stories of the Black LGBTQ community in this film without any sort of sugar-coating or romanticization. The stories told in the film help to depict real issues that shape their lives as a community with this certain shared identity. In Tongues Untied, there was the idea that this community has been silenced in the past, and so Livingston is giving them the opportunity to share the experiences and perspectives.

I think Livingston was trying to establish a connection between the viewers and the black LGBTQIA+ community. Throw showing a variety of different experiences within the community through very personal lenses and stories, Livingston draws the audience in and makes human gay and transgender black people in america who often were not treated as such, and still lack respect today. By showing moments of beauty in conjunction with moments of pain, trauma, and injustice I think she accomplishes this effectively.
