Coal was one of the first fossil fuels to be utilised. It is the most efficient fossil fuel and the main source of energy/electricity. However, burning coal emits a significant amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere increasing the amount of atmospheric pollution.

The first known environmental effect from coal was acid rain.
