Coal was formed during the Carboniferous era (300-360 million years ago) from layers of peat and fallen trees pressurised under sediments. Coal was one of the first fossil fuels to be utilised. It is the most efficient fossil fuel and the main source of energy/electricity. However, burning coal emits a significant amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere increasing the amount of atmospheric pollution.

The first known environmental effect from coal was acid rain.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coal
http://www.oresomeresources.com/resources_view/resource/video_uses_of_coal
