In this part of the book, Holden describes his family and home life. He has a somewhat strained relationship with his parents, two brothers, one older and in Hollywood, and the other deceased. Holden also has a sister that he has the strongest bond to. A new character, Jane Gallagher is announced. She becomes a kind of love interest for Holden. After Straedtler says he went on a date and wouldn't disclose specifics, Holden and him have an altercation, after which Holden sells his typewriter and takes off. He decides on going to New York City and spends the first night calling any girl he can think of to get drinks with him. He then goes on a bender by visiting trashy nightclubs and looking for anyone to drink with him, (Ranging from random women to cab drivers.). He gets a hotel and goes to a bar attached to the building, where he finds three older women that he harasses until they give in and dance with him. This process repeats a while unsuccessfully until he is approached by an elevator guy offering a $5 prostitute. He ends up accepting the offer but turns her down and pays her the $5 anyway when she demands $10 for her services.
