I had to take a step back and reflect on how I was starting to slip. I wouldn't wait for everyone to do as I expected. One example I immediately thought of was I didn't wait for everyone to respond to our class' secret word (a signal for their mouths to shut and have eyes on me). As I stood back and realize what I was really doing, I was able to see that by not waiting on every student to comply, I would have less and less students who would comply. So I decided to act. I waited for the 100%. By doing this again as I did at the beginning of the year, the students knew I was serious and that it was something I expected from everyone. I feel myself slipping in other areas when it comes to compliance, but from watching the video I know I need to wait for my 100% in order to cause me less stress. My only question is how long should I wait? I have one student who will not comply no matter what. The whole class but this student will be complying and the student will just make a joke and stir up the commotion again. It's a hard case because the student, the parent, myself, and even the principal has even tried to get this student to be compliant. It's bad to say, but my attitude towards it is almost just a 'oh it's almost over and I have no energy to fight it' kind of attitude. I loved in the video how the teacher said he used his hands going to different directions and waited for all of his students to do the same before getting them to do what he wanted. Do NOT entertain any inappropriate response by this student or other students when he/she refuses to comply. You have to be sure not to let them see it getting "under your skin". You could definitely try to use the hand motions/signal, but also give lots of positive response (verbal) to those that do comply and comment on their speed of compliance. I have to step back and rethink how I can motivate him. I really enjoyed this video because it was eye opening. I want to be a teacher that students respect. Even though I have a few students that "get my goat" I understand that I can not let them know that. I have noticed that when I announce "Thank you (student name) for following directions. This has worked well to motivate the students to stay on task. I will definitely be trying the 100% compliance starting tomorrow!! With being the end of the year, it is important to tighten up on management to keep students engaged and focused. What works one year does not always work another. Procedures and rules are continuously evolving. I do try to praise students for great behavior calling them by name and reearding them. I also do group rewards. My struggle is with how to approach a student about a negative behavior.
