I am a white, fat, queer, trans and non-binary parent, nurse scientist, educator, and inventor. My scholarship is grounded in emancipatory theories of nursing and principles of design justice and data feminism, both which derive from the foundational work of Black feminist scholars like Dr. Patricia Hill Collins. I also serve on the Research Advisory Board of TransHealth, and co-chair the American Academy of Nursing’s ITEP Nursing Education and A.I. Task Force.

Hi! My name is Jess Dillard-Wright. I am a white, fat, queer, genderqueer, parent, partner, nurse, midwife, dissident occupying lands unjustly seized and occupied in imperial actions. I work at University of Massachusetts Amherst where I study the intersection where nursing, history, activism, and philosophy meet. My work, I hope, disrupts some of the violence of hegemonic whiteness, the pernicious influence of capitalism, and the constraints of cisheteropatriarchy in nursing and beyond using feminist new materialism, critical posthumanism, anarchism, and abolition. I hope, anyway, fully aware of the precarity of participating in systems and institutions that uphold oppressive regimes while purporting even striving to change them. I am learning and unlearning and relearning all the time, an active and expansive project that will never end, I hope, not even when I’m dead and gone.

My dissertation is a quality inquiry of feeling content, within the humanbecoming nursing theoretical orientation. Fundamental to this inquiry is the tension (paradox) that we can feel content and also feel malcontent with the systems around us - change can / should be inspired while we continue to live our lives. Your group is doing relevant, needed, inspirational work!

I appreciate your use of the phrase "pragmatic protest," with the recognition that technology isn't going anywhere, and that we can continue to use it mindfully and within a justice framework. Too often we're taught that protest means absolute abstinence from something, and while techno-development should be criticized and could be implemented more equitably, I can't just throw my iPhone out the window and shake my fist in triumph for the sake of righteousness...after all, my EV is linked up to it, so getting home from this conference would be problematic. : P Thank you for sharing your needed perspective in this ongoing debate!
