"'This is for my mother,' I said. 'Saving bonobos is the most important thing for her.'" (Schrefer 6) At the begging of to book, Sophie goes against her Driver, Clement's, will and buys Otto. She does it out of her compassion and feeling for him, and also for her mother. If we were to all treat humans as Sophie treated Otto, we would all be in a safer and improving society.

Matriarchal societies show that the power of working together can overcome any evil

"'The pink ladies?'
'That's what we call them. Bonobos are matriarchal--- that means that the females are in charge. Because bonobo females spend all day together and help care for one another's children, it makes them very close, so they're able to band together and have power over the males. Even though the males are bigger and stronger, if any of them steps out of line, the Pink Ladies gang up on him and teach him a lesson.'" (Schrefer 54) The Pink Ladies have shown that working together can overcome any evil actions. They did this when Pweto accidentally killed his and Anastasia's child. Even though Pweto was stronger, when the Pink Ladies came together they reprimanded Pweto.

To survive we require the love and generosity of others.

"Hearing nothing, I risked a look out and saw two teenage girls, one my age and the other a little older, expressions hard and weapons gripped in trembling fingers. Seeing me, the older girl lowered the barrel of her gun and croaked out 'Do you have any water?'" With this we see that those two girls need help from Sophie to survive. Sophie gives them water and continues on her way. Otto also relied on Sophie's generosity and love. He was very close to death and was nursed back to health with the help of Sophie and the sanctuary members. Without Sophie's help Otto and those two girls most likely would have died.
