The effect of music listening on creative thinking

I like the idea that is in the conclusion, it says "Demonstrating that the effect of music exposure is the result of an individual’s emotional reaction to musical stimuli helps to resolve a theoretically intriguing issue in the field, and it explains why some studies support the idea that listening to a piece of music composed by Mozart or other composers can enhance cognitive functioning when others cannot. Such findings imply that the pedagogical benefits of music depend more on the interactions between individual factors and the type or style of music. "

The choice of the piece of music to foster creative thinking of a person should be well determined, in a way that we treat it as a teaching material. Or, it should not be pre-determined, because listening to music is out of our conscience - we are listening to many kinds of sound/music in every minute we live, and truly they are influencing us.

This book came up as as an ad while I was perusing the creativity post! It identifies 10 habits of highly creative minds and examines the lives of some highly creative people. Habits that stuck out are imaginative play , daydreaming, and solitude. I'm thinking about the lack of these 3 in a typical student's day (or discouragement of *cough* daydreaming). How can we as music educators carve space for these in our rooms? Acting out The Firebird with Kindergartners? Facilitate solitary listening time with music for middle schoolers? Other ideas?

I think that after our conversation today in class about the kind of environment that encourages creativity, Kagan Cooperative Learning really relates. The school district I worked in right out of undergrad offered training workshops to become "Certified." I truly loved my experience and really saw a difference in my classroom environment after incorporating some of the techniques I learned. It's all about student engagement, and the various methods (both teaching related and non-teaching related) used to enhance this in the classroom. It's for all teachers, but I think music teachers especially can draw from this to create a "safer" environment for creativity. I'm attaching their "About Us" page... and after you get past the awful neon colors on the website, it might be interesting to explore. I honestly haven't looked at their website much, but I could bring in the book that I have!

It is not research-based (as far as I can see), but approaches the topic from the idea that a supervisor might say, "We need innovation so that we can compete, RIGHT NOW!" When employees don't deliver, the response is, "Why can't you just be creative?”
