Pg. 12: “Learning science [and technology] is something students do, not something that is done to them.” – this is something that we have gone over many times already in this course, but I don’t think that I realized it was written in the curriculum document (maybe I should have and I overlooked it?). I don’t think we can hear this enough, and reading it while reviewing the curriculum document is a great reminder to help us build out lessons and learning experiences with this in mind. CRYSTAL

I was reading about anti-discrimination education and I know that in the curriculum expectations that philosophy has been weaved in somewhat. However, I was wondering if there were more explicit ways we can embed it into the curriculum, especially when it comes to equity and human rights? DANIELLE

2. Another question is in regards to the health and safety concerns. It says that specialized training is required for teachers using saws, drills, etc. But what about teachers using chemicals or other tools that you would find in a science class? I know the text books provide little safety blurbs as needed, but I think students should be taught the safety considerations/rules needed in a science classroom. PETER

The increased emphasis on science, technology, society, and the environment (STSE) within this curriculum document provides numerous opportunities for teachers to integrate environmental education effectively into the curriculum.

This surprised me because it was nice to see that environmental education was given a lot of priority in our curriculum. I feel that environmental education is something that students need to be taught from a very young age and it is connected to everything in our lives. As educators it is our responsibility to create environmental stewards because our world is becoming more cognizant of the need for environmental sustainability and therefore it is essential that our students are environmentally literate.

AMSA
