The Mattachine Society

The Mattachine Society was formed on the winter of 1950 by a group of 5 gay men who were ex communist and radicals. The founder of this society was Harry Hay. This group were originally composed of gay men who would share their personal experiences. Next, this group began to help sponsor discussion groups for lesbians and gay men to give them an opportunity to openly share. Not only that, but the Mattachine Society strived to create a society where everyone was welcome despite their sexual orientation or race.

This all correlates to what is happening in the picture. In the picture, there is an gay advocacy group protesting for equality. The name of the group is the National Gay Task Force, and this march took place in a large city, presumably New York. This National Gay Task Force is an organization that that fights for equality of all sexual orientations. Like the Mattachine Society, the National Gay Task Force are fighting for equality.

When I look at this picture, a feeling of deep sorrow resonates deep within me. The people in the photo are people just like us; yet they are denied equality. Their denial in equality and freedom of expression brings sorrow to my heart because they must continue to fight for their rights.

Even today, the event in the picture holds prominent. In today’s world, men and women who are gay and lesbian must still fight against adversity. To this day, they must continue to stand against the odds and fight for equality.

Harvey Milk and his assassination

Harvey Milk was born in May 22, 1930, in Woodmere, New York. He was a politician that was gay and elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Milk moved to San Francisco because he was bored with his life in New York. He opened a camera shop and put his life and work right in the heart of the city's gay community.

He had political connections with George Moscone, Willie Browne, Dianne Feinstein. Milk was an outspoken leader in the gay community. He wanted to help issues like child care to housing to a civilian police review board. Dan White, a Vietnam veteran and former police officer and fireman shot Mayor Moscone and Milk in November 27, 1978 at the city hall. Dan White went into city hall with a .38 revolver and avoided metal detectors by going through a basement window that was open for ventilation. White then went into the mayor's office and started arguing with Moscone to re-appoint him. Then they went into a more private room and then White told him to reappoint him again, but Moscone refused so White shot him twice in the head and twice in the chest.White then went down to the corridor and shot Milk twice in the chest, twice in the head, and once in the back. He then turned himself at the police station that he use to work at.When Milk passed away the U.S Navy announced that they would be naming a tank after Milks honor. Milk's nephew praised the decision, say it would send “green light to all brave men and women who serve the nation.”

Harvey Milk’s situation connects to gay right’s today because people still struggle with problems because gay kids get bullied for being gay. Harvey Milk’s situation made me feel a little disappointed because he got killed for being gay. I believe this is really sad because no one should get killed for liking someone that’s their own gender.

Stonewall Riot

In 1969, the Stonewall Riot took place in New York City at a bar called “Stonewall”, police spontaneously and violently treated the gay community. They were attacked because the bar did not have their alcohol license to sell alcohol to bar visitors and once the bar employees began to be arrested, lesbians were forced in a police van which stirred watchers emotions and violence took place.

This triggered activists and it became a five day riot of gay pride, their rights and flying the gay flag. This contributed to a worldwide gay pride movement. It is considered the first gay protest for homosexuals.

To this day, we still have violent acts towards gays; in 2016 at a Florida gay bar called “Pulse Nightclub” there were fifty fatalities because they were homosexual. The attacker was a terrorist apart of isis who said he shot the club visitors because he “was triggered by an airstrike in Iraq who killed an ISIL commander” six weeks before the shooting in Florida Gay pride is still a movement and there are parades, bars and clubs to support the L.G.B.T. community.
