The "The Look" ad by Proctor and Gamble was released in 2019 and highlights the issue of "the look.” “The Look” refers to the judgment and discrimination that African Americans may face simply because of the color of their skin. This ad illuminates the issue of racial bias and stereotypes that continue to be prevalent in our society and continuously affects African American youth. In the ad, a young Black girl and specifically her father are shown receiving disapproving looks from various people in multiple settings where others are shown to feel comfortable, including a diner, a public sidewalk, and a swimming pool. Illustrating how even today African Americans are often subjected to negative and unfair treatment just based on their race. The ad then shows the perspective of someone in a courtroom who you assume to be the judge, it then shifts off that perspective to reveal the man as the judge. Finishing with the statement “Lets talk about the look so we can see beyond it.”

One of the most effective ways that the ad addresses the issue of racial bias and stereotypes is by highlighting the experiences of the man and his daughter. By focusing on them throughout a normal day they may experience, the ad highlights how without being explicitly racist, the stereotypes and stigmas surrounding African Americans still affect the views of their on lookers. The ad is an effective example of how advertising can be used to address issues of diversity and inclusion. By asking their viewers to talk about “The Look” they are helping a more positive and inclusive day to day life of African Americans be made. Although the ad does not confront any systemic problems or explicit racism, the ad challenges harmful stereotypes and biases and encourages viewers to recognize their subconscious actions.

Awareness

I believe this ad did a great job at dealing with the issue effectively. They did not target any specific group in their claims of racial bias and were able to place people in a real life situation they might find themselves in. They did not throw around accusations aimed at a certain group, but just encouraged people to take a second to think before looking negatively at someone. "The Look" ad by Proctor and Gambel's is an important and impactful example of how advertising can be used to promote greater awareness and understanding of issues of diversity and inclusion. By challenging harmful stereotypes and biases, they helped promote a more inclusive and positive society for everyone.
