I think that Jonas’ favorite memory is the memory of Christmas that the Giver gave him. When the memory starts, Jonas feels immense joy. “Jonas felt the joy of it as soon as the memory began”(Lowry, 122). Jonas was in a room with a fireplace surrounded by a family at night. There was a brightly colored tree with many decorations. “There were colored lights: red and green and yellow, twinkling from a tree which was, oddly, inside the room”(Lowry, 122). Jonas then saw a child pick up brightly wrapped boxes on the floor and the child opened them, receiving many items like toys and clothes. The kid yelled with happiness and hugged their grandparents. “The small child went and sat on the lap of the old woman, and she rocked him and rubbed her cheek against His” (Lowry, 123). Jonas described the memory as very bright and happy. Jonas even learns an emotion that was new to him: “love”. Jonas also learned about grandparents because of this memory.

I think Jonas’ most painful memory was watching the new child twin get released. Jonas watched his father through a screen inject something into the child’s head and realized that the child had died from the gestures the child made. Jonas then realized in anger and sadness his father had killed the child. “He killed it! My father killed it!”(Lowry, 150). Jonas then watched his father send the body down a chute in a box. In reaction to this, Jonas yelled that he didn’t want to go home after seeing what his father had done “"I won't! I won't go home! You can't make me!"”(Lowry, 152). This event tormented Jonas throughout the rest of the book, realizing that each time someone was released they were killed and that anyone set for release would meet the same fate.

My favorite memory was when we got my grandma’s dog. It was in mid-October 2018 when my grandma went to get a dog at a pet store. It was about the tenth of October when my grandma picked a dachshund poodle mix but she wasn’t able to take the dog home yet because we were going to Omaha for my birthday to see the Omaha Zoo. The Zoo was alright but I was still very eager to see my Grandma’s dog in person. The day after we got home on the fourteenth, my older brother had a soccer game and my grandma, my little brother and I went to go pick up the dog. I don’t remember much from the dog store except holding my grandma's new dog, Max, and my Mom, Dad, and brother coming into the store after a very cold soccer game. We then took Max home to my grandma’s house. We set all of his stuff up and played with him the rest of the day.

A painful memory I have was during swimming practice when I was about four or five years old. When I was younger, I was a very bad swimmer. In fact, I wore water wings until I was about nine years old. I’m pretty good at swimming now, but my lack of basic swimming skills back when I was young brought me a pretty big scare. It started as just a basic swimming lesson. I wasn't really learning anything. I don't remember if I just didn’t understand or if I just ignored the lesson and did the bare minimum. At the end of this lesson, we did something different. We went into the deep pool. Most of the time the pool had people in it, so we never went in, but on that day it was empty, so we went in it. We first swam into it. We were using floats that looked kind of looked like dumbbells. Once we got to the very deep end, we had to let go of our floats and try to stay above the water. Immediately after I let go of my float, I went under the water struggling to get back up. My instructor didn’t notice me drowning because she was helping someone else. I continued to struggle to get up and, because I was four years old, I couldn’t control myself and started to panic. I was already about 6 feet down when I swam up to a wall and climbed up the concrete wall. I managed to make it backup clinging onto the edge of the pool. My instructor then noticed me and I immediately got in trouble for hanging onto the wall. I told my instructor that I almost drowned and she didn’t believe me. After my lesson was over, I told my mom and she didn’t believe me either. I remember being very mad since nobody believed that I nearly drowned.

The image of this Christmas tree symbolizes Jonas’ memory. Jonas felt a warm comforting feeling during this memory and the image has a comforting vibe to it. The warm colors really make this image stand out and, as described in the book, the tree was brightly lit, indoors, and had wrapped boxes surrounding it which is just like this image. This image sets the same tone as what was in the book.

This image of my Grandma’s dog symbolizes my good memory as it shows the time period of the dog. Whenever I see these old pictures, it always reminds me of the faded memory of the day we got him. The blurred photo represents how the memory has faded away from me yet how I can still make out the main details of it.

This image of a pool symbolizes my painful memory because it looks like what I saw at that moment. The photo taken deep in the pool is almost exactly what I saw at the moment in almost the exact same type of pool in nearly the same position. The pool being deep and empty also represents how I felt at that moment, feeling like I wouldn't be able to get out.
