We have been doing this by having students talk about and create a Personal Growth Plan (PGP). Each month the school takes time to discuss the benefits of having a growth mindset and gives students the opportunity to share success stories seen in their lives.

- I know that it is important to start small. Students, for example, could work to solve creative puzzles and then discuss who they needed a growth mindset to do so.

- This allows students to understand that with hard work and effort they can excel at even the most challenging problems/aspects of life.

- We tell students that, your brain is like a muscle- when you try challenging things you are exercising your brain to allow it to learn more.

I know that Growth Mindset has a lot to do with positive self-talk. Having a growth mindset means you are able to persevere through challenges with resilience, and not give up when things get hard. There is a lot of power in the word "yet". Educating with a growth mindset means you, as the teacher, believe in the capabilities of each of your students, and choose to engage them in activities that help build their own growth mindsets as well.

Even at the Kindergarten level I get students who give up as soon as something feels too difficult for them (even if I know they can do it). It feels that no matter how much I try to fill them with positive mindset words, they are not able to transfer that to their own mindset and self-talk. I would also love to learn some resources (read alouds or other materials) that I can use to help teach growth mindset to my students.

I learned so many valuable resources and built a solid foundation on what growth mindset really was! Growth mindset is the understanding that your intelligence isn't something that you are born with, but instead something that can be nurtured and developed through perseverance and hard work. One of the most important understandings with growth mindset is that it is okay to fail and fall forward. Every time we encounter something challenging, we try our best with our current skill set, and if we don't get it then we are able to learn from our mistakes and are ready to tackle the next challenge! I learned appropriate phrases to help praise the effort, which also helps students with expanding their growth mindset. I collected several learning resources I can use as a parent for myself, a teacher, and resources to send to the families in my class. Growth mindset isn't just one activity to complete and students get it, instead is a shift in our thinking!

Use growth mindset phrases or words in your classroom often and have them up around the room so student use them too. I also learned that as teachers we should take the time to go through the problems that students go wrong so they can learn from their mistakes. Ultimately, I learned that we should always use the word yet with our students.

The "not yet" approach is so important in all aspects of teaching. The more you can encourage the effort and celebrate the successes, no matter how big or small, make a world of a difference. It reminds me of the other courses I took towards this master's in coaching questions. You have to be a better listener and use guiding questions vs. being the answer giver all the time. Use challenging questions and guiding questions and allow "failure" as an opportunity to succeed next time. As long as you give it your all, you can always set new goals and keep working. The hill is always going to be there, whether it is in education, life or anything you do but keep digging and take setbacks in stride but keep digging!

I received some great resources like posters, videos to show children, books to read, and ways to give feedback. I am most excited about utilizing the feedback tips as this is an area that I struggle in. I think I have left this class with a fresh take on growth mindset and I am ready to try some strategies next school year.

As educators we are training, or rather-retraining, the brain! It will take time, but we have to start teaching students that they are in charge of making connections in their brain. We need to be aware of the language we use and how we praise students. We need to normalize mistakes and help students understand that mistakes are opportunities to grow. Also, we need to model the growth mindset for our students.

I learned the importance of words and the language we use, I learned the importance of the learning process. The process of failure is a great learning tool and that criticism should not be the end but only the beginning. When a student fails they have an opportunity to try again and achieve the goal the next time. I also learned the importance of praise and especially praising effort and not only results.

Throughout this course, one of the biggest ideas that kept coming up over and over again for me was that I need to first focus on my own resilience and mindset before I try to change my students' mindsets. I need to remember that I am a role model and they are looking to me to see how I am reacting to challenges, struggle, and sometimes defeat. I need to remember that yes, I am not there yet, but I CAN accomplish anything with patience and perseverance. I also have learned what an amazing organ the brain really is and I find it fascinating how powerful it truly is! I look forward to teaching my students about this, because this was never introduced to me as an elementary student, and think some of my students would feel empowered with this information.

The language we use in the classroom and with our students is so important and can go so far in creating a growth mindset in our students. I learned the importance of teaching about the brain before the students can understand how we grow our brain.
