I would love to establish an SEL program at Mayfield Elementary. This is easier than it sounds. The first thing that comes to mind is to have celebration of different cultures that involves the community. Invite family to celebrate Hispanic History Month, Black History Month, etc. We want our students to feel comfortable with diverse communities.

People who practice SEL develop life long skills and protective factors. This helps with mental health. SEL promotes healthy relationships, emotional skills, and emotionally safe environments. This better equips people to deal with usual issues that come up in life. We want our children to have these skills.

I would also suggest asking questions that support SEL during readings and assignments to get the children thinking. For example, how did this action make the others characters feel and why?
We could also encourage these types of questions during classroom discussions or group discussions among students.
A positive school and classroom environment help students feel comfortable at school, and establish friendships. Creating activities that help the students share who they are to the class is a fun way to do this. For example, show and tell, all about me posters, vision board, etc.
