The conch is what is used to round up all the boys on the island. It is also used as the talking piece. This helps develop character as it shows who is a leader and who is not due to how much they get to hold the conch and talk. Ralph is the leader because he hilds the conch and people listen. Piggy, however, is the exact opposite.

We Wear the Mask

Lord of the Flies and We Wear the Mask both use masks to show the change of behavior in society. In Lord of the Flies, the mask is a literal mask, which the boys paint on their face with clay. This change in appearance allows the boys to act differently as if the person with the mask on is a different person, so there are no consequences. After Jack paints his face, he begins to be more defiant towards Ralph, showing the change in mindset that the mask helped create. The mask symbolized in We Wear the Masks, however, is a different kind of mask. This mask is not a literal mask, as it is figurative. The mask is a symbol to show how people fake smiles for society and to hide how one is truly feeling. A lot of times in society, we “let them only see us, while we wear the mask” (8-9). Humans have an image that they want to be viewed as, thus, symbolizing them wearing a mask and being fake towards others. Overall, in Lord of the Flies and We Wear the Masks, the symbol of masks is used to convey how differently people behave when wearing a mask.

Id, ego, superego

In Lord of the Flies, characters connect to Freud's ideas to survive. All the boys are in the id state of mind, disregarding what is morally right, in order to survive. Simon was killed because the boys were not thinking straight as they were defending themselves from the "beast". The id within themselves was unleashed, and they did whatever they needed to do to survive. Jack's ego gets the best of him, as he wants to be the chief, so he becomes the chief of his own army. Which eventually leads to the two groups of boys working against each other instead of together. Ralph reflects on Jack and realizes the way that Jack is acting is not normal, thus, showing his superego. The display of superego by Ralph shows how he was a good leader and was morally above Jack, as he could still see the difference in right and wrong.
