Urie Bronfenbrenner was an American psychologist who developed the Ecological System Theory. His theory looked at childhood development as direct result of the child's environment. Bronfenbrenner believed that development was shaped by means beside just psychological growth. He looked at how things like culture, economy and, politics shaped childhood development.

Urie was born on April 29, 1917, in Moscow, Russia. At the age of six, his family moved to The United States where he watched his father work as a neuropathologist with the developmentally incapacitated. Later, Urie went on to double major in psychology and music at Cornell University. He then went on to receive a Masters degree in education from Harvard University and then a PhD in Developmental Psychology.

The Ecological Systems Theory is used by psychologists today to get a holistic view on an individual in order to better understand them and create a more concrete treatment plan. Also, the theory has laid a foundation for other psychologists such as Margaret Beale Spencer. Margaret used the structure of Ecological Systems Theory to guide her research into how Ethnicity, Race and, Gender impact development.

What's the issue?

One major criticism of Bronfenbrenner's theory is that it only takes into consideration how the effects of nurture has on a child and does not account for any effects that nature might have. This makes his theory very rigid and one sided, which is interesting considering the scope of influences he believes have an effect on development.

In the age of technology, it would be fair to say that we can push the mesosystem back and place technosystem as the most immediate influence on technology. When parents working from home and need quiet, they hand their child a device. When a child wants to hang out with their friends, they hop on Xbox and play Fortnite. When children what to talk to someone they are interested in, they send a snapchat. When they want to meet a new potential lover, they open a dating app.
