https://youtu.be/RVd6CnKLPgY
Flashback activities can work very effectively to practice past tenses and reported speech.
I used the flashback scene from Ratatuille to make my students describe the relation between smells and memories.
The prompt was:
"That time I smelled...and immediately began to remember.."
I used this activity with my B2 group of 5 students.
We first had a short brainstorming about how smells can set memories in motion.
Students then worked individually writing a short text in the past tense .
We then put all the texts together in a box, mix them and pick one up, so that each student had another student's text.
After that, I asked the students to read the text they had picked up silently. As a conclusion, I asked them to take turns in reporting the content of the text using reported speech.
The activity worked very well and students showed enthusiasm throughout the lesson.

You could choose specific moments of films and ask sts what they think happened before that or how the characters ended up in that situatio. They could record themselves and add some effects to show how they "travel in time".

Flashback Storyboard Activity

Another Flashback activity could be that participants think of a collective experience they had together and how they feel about it in the present. For example: a really good excursion in the past, and TODAY we all feel happy because of it. We use the happy state as the present situation and draw the storyboard of past events that have lead up to this current happiness. Limit flashback storyboard pictures to a few only and ask learners to annotate them in the past tense. This will also boost collaboration for planning of what should be included in the content.
