Freedom of religion, pres protest and speech. These rights also protect freedom of speech that may not always be positive but negative. I believe that the first amendment should protect hate speech. I think this because everyone has a right to share there voice. They don’t have to, but they own that right. If hate speech wasn’t a thing, sure our country could be less “violent” but a lot of people could be “breaking the law” because they say that they dislike the way taxes are. Hate speech is ok and it can sometimes be helpful, but it gets out of hand once people start acting on there hate by hurting others, causing destruction and violence etc. I feel that a good amount of the time, hate crimes are in fact linked to hate speech. People get worked up and feed up with what they are protesting on and they decide to act on it. Luckily, the constitution says that this is not ok. “First Amendment does not give anyone the right to make threats or false statements, or use language that incites violence. After reading the article, I do think that we should use censorship with ideas we do not agree with in our nation. I believe the government should limit what can be said so that people cannot always just refer back to the First Amendment if they are saying something that can be offensive to others. One member of the A.C.L.U. of Virginia board even resigned, writing on Twitter that “what’s legal and what’s right are sometimes different.” I agree with this quote that says just because it's legal it doesn't mean it's right. I do not think that the first amendment should protect hate speech. I do not think that the amendment should protect hate speech because I don't think it's right for people to be able to say things that are offensive to others and what they believe or what they stand for. “The landmark case helped clarify that all people have the right to rally publicly, no matter how offencive their views.” I do not agree with this quote. After I read this quote it made me realize that maybe it was not such a good idea to have you so that people can say whatever they want. This also made me think that there should be a limit to what you can stay and do under the First Amendment. This is a really big coincidence but my mom just found a letter on her car that read “My niece if half blind and has delayed cognitive function, she’s also four. She could have managed to park better than you. Must not have been taught the word consideration in your upbringing. Be better. Sincerely, People who actually Live Here.” I think that this just backs up my reasonings more. This is why I think that it is not right for people to be able to say hurtful things and be protected by the First Amendment rule.


]]> 2021-02-18 20:36:06 UTC https://padlet.com/CHZ2MTR/j0zivql1x2smrj79/wish/1216987759 Kellan Boulan https://padlet.com/CHZ2MTR/j0zivql1x2smrj79/wish/1216993860 The purpose of the 1st amendment is to give the freedoms of speech, religion, protest, assembly, and the press.  It ensures us that we have that right and we are allowed to use that right.  The freedom of speech allows us to give our opinion to the people.  It allows us to express our ideas if people like them or not.  Freedom of speech does not protect "Fighting Words", though.  It allows us to practice our religion anywhere and anytime.  It allows us to protest in the park on a certain law that you may not like.  It allows us to assemble together and peacefully protest.  It also gives the freedom of the press to let them say what they want about us.  I think the 1st amendment should protect hate speech.  I think everybody's voice should be heard even if their point is good or bad.  If we didn't have hate speech then that could question if we had Freedom of Speech at all.  The government would then choose what we hear or say.  I do think that we should limit the amount of violence that goes into hate speech, but I think people should get their points across to people.  We shouldn't say false or make threats towards people because that is not protected by the Constitution.  An example of what could happen if we didn't have hate speech, "But the problem is, if we outlaw speech, that means the government or others in authority are going to be picking and choosing what we hear. Just because you don't agree with someone does not mean you get to shut them up. An example of this is Donald Trump. He is shut down by major corporations because of his political opinions.       Hate speech is obviously bad and everybody knows that so when people post on social media they get criticized. People tell them they're racist, sexist, discriminatory, ect.. Banning them or quieting them lets people not see the messed up post so they can’t give their opinion and tell them there are wrong or right. I think hate speech should be censored, for a few different reasons. For one, hate speech makes others feel unsafe and discriminated against, which I believe goes against the concept of 'Land of the free'. It could be argued that the way to combat hate speech is to try and correct the ideas of these people, but that isn't how it works. Just imagine if a Neo-Nazi tried to convince you that minority groups are the problem in America and they should all be killed. Would you agree with them? Of course not, in your mind they are in the wrong, and that's how they think as well. Of course some people who use hate speech realize it is morally wrong, but trying to convince them that their entire ideology is incorrect won't do anything. This is especially true in our modern society where political correctness is seen as more valuable than reaching a resolution. I believe hate speech is somewhat linked to hate crimes, because most of the time hate speech ENCOURAGES hate crimes. If you're constantly preaching "Kill the jews" then someone is going to do it, one way or another. We shouldn't censor hate speech becaue it wouldn't allow us to speak our opinions and it wouldn't allow us to grow as a country and see other points of view. What we should censor is the hate speech that goes to far. There is a major difference between having an opinion and threating others. For example, "The demonstration went forward with protesters numbering in the hundreds many of them armed with assault rifles," (First Amendment & Hate Speech, Upfront article) This shows that the protesters were not having a peaceful protest (which is what the first amendment protects) and that they were intimidating and threatening the people with assault riffles which is not protected by the first amendment because you are harming others. You also don't have to have a weapon to be threating others. Verbal threats can be a crime if it's a threat to physically hurt you or a group of people. To summarize, I think that you have the right to say what you want and feel, but not if it is expressed in a way that intimidates or puts others at risk of danger.

It allows people to organize protests, freely practice any religion, and speak out against people or the government. For example, the government cannot arrest someone for saying that the government is tyrannical. I don't believe hate speech should be censored. I don't think it should be because its a core part of the protections in the first amendment. Removing hate speech can destroy a core part of the open civil discourse we have and could lead to the 1st amendment being repealed further.
